Windows Messanger

The easy way without having to download/run anything is just go to C:\Program Files\Messenger and rename the file msmsgs.exe to something else. I just use msmsgs-old.exe.

Since there is no longer a valid file name for apps to run it just won't start. Been doing this for a couple of years and never see messanger start up.

Thanks everyone for your help. Glad to get rid of it.

disable it (and a few other things if you research them well) in the Services - Control panel - Admin controls - services - right click and set to disable.

You can also disable remote desktop services, remote registry etc.... but make sure you know what you are doing first as most components are necessary for windows to run. There are a number of good sites that explain the various services.
