KHOST, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A suicide bombing on Friday killed at least ten people and injured several more in eastern Afghanistan, the state-run Bakhtar News agency reported.

The blast took place at about 9:00 a.m. local time in Khost city, the capital of Khost province. The suicide bomber detonated himself in a car loaded with explosives at a police checkpoint.

Police officers stopped the vehicle as it approached the post located at the start of the main road to Paktia province but the terrorist managed to detonate the vehicle as law agents tried to stop him.

As a result, at least 10 people were killed including a police officer, three women and the suicide bomber. In addition, 29 others were injured and taken to the Khost Civil Hospital.

"So far, I can confirm ten people, including a policeman, were killed and over 18 others injured in the blast," said Amir Badshah Mangal, provincial public health department director.

Four of the wounded individuals are in critical condition while four others are police officers. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing as announced by their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.
