Egyptian banks to reopen on Sunday to avoid further damage to country's economy

CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- Banks in Egypt will reopen on Sunday during normal business hours to avoid further damage to the country's economy in wake of a revolution that forced the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, according to the Central Bank of Egypt.

Egyptian banks closed late last month when chaos and massive anti-government protests gripped the country, eventually leading to the ouster of Mubarak.

The state-run Al-Ahram newspaper said the banks would reopen on Sunday during normal business hours to satisfy customer needs and avoid more setbacks to the Egyptian economy. Earlier this week, banks had also tried to reopen but were forced to close again when thousands of employees went on a strike.

Protesters were thus requested to assign committees of 10 to 20 members to communicate their demands to the Central Bank of Egypt, Al-Ahram said. The committee meetings are scheduled to begin Monday.
