February 21, 201115 yr Would anyone happen to know the Thai name for allspice the cooking spice? It's also sometimes called pimento in the Caribbean. I did find several translations for pimento but they were for dried fruit rather than the spice. I'm trying to explain what a Jerk seasoning is but am struggling with this one key ingredient...
February 21, 201115 yr There is no comparable word, it's transliterates into Thai as "ออลสไปรส์" and pronounce "on-sa-pipe" in Thai.

February 22, 201115 yr Right, it appears allspice is called, simply, ออลสไปซ์ (note the slightly different spelling from above). Depending on the English language exposure of the speaker, that could be pronounced either "ออ-สไปซ์" aw-sa-pice, "ออน-สะไป" awn-sa-py, or other permutations. But it's not common here. There's a brief Wikipedia entry for it: http://th.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%A5%E0%B8%AA%E0%B9%84%E0%B8%9B%E0%B8%8B%E0%B9%8C And another page on a Thai cooking website: http://www.foodietaste.com/FoodPedia_detail.asp?id=150
