Police told to increase efforts in preventing drug abuse

BANGKOK, 5 March 2011 (NNT)-National Police Chief Wichean Potphosri said Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was only reiterating to the police to increase their efforts in narcotic drug eradication in Bangkok’s surrounding provinces, not denouncing their operation as reported.

The National Police Chief said police have made less than expected arrests so far while illicit drugs continue to spread from Bangkok to those provinces. However, police are expected to carry out further investigations on small dealers in order to get to the major ones.

In an attempt to prevent future drug abuse, drug suppression police and the Ministry of Education will coordinate on providing a lecture on illegal drugs to schools across Thailand as well as encouraging them to report to the police of any drug abuse found in schools.

Drug Education..."Just say 'No' ". Let's face it. All the education about drug use will have no effect if one's environment is conducive to the use of drugs. If Dad comes home drunk every day after work (That is assuming Dad stayed around after getting Mom knocked up), beats up Mom and then passes out, chances are that's what Junior is going to do when he comes of age. Doesn't matter what the drug of choice is, alcohol, yabba, opiates, Dad has taught Junior that drugs are the way to deal with life's problems and addiction is 'normal'.

In a society which instills the belief that children should revere and obey their parents, children have to be confused when they are told not to do drugs, yet must emulate their addict parents at the same time.

And...should the police be the substance abuse educators? I am sure someone else will offer the reasons that this is not a great idea.

Some major societal changes must take place first before drug education can have any beneficial effect.
