Iran rejects alleged arms trafficking to Afghanistan

TEHRAN, IRAN (BNO NEWS) -- Iran on Tuesday strongly rejected the allegations that the Islamic country is trafficking arms to Afghanistan, the Fars news agency reported.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said that the government led by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not support Afghan militant groups or arms trafficking to Afghanistan.

"The weapons cargo discovered in Afghanistan is not related to Iran and this issue is not true at all," said Mehman-Parast. "Iran is itself a victim of extremism and terrorism and a number of its diplomats have been killed by in the region."

In Kabul, Afghan Interior Minister Bismullah Mohammadi Khan also rejected the media allegations and labeled Iran as 'a long-time supporter of peace and tranquility for Afghanistan'.

"We have no evidence proving that Iran supports such groups, and Iran has always helped security and reconstruction of Afghanistan," added Mohammadi Khan.

Last week, the two nations announced a future committee to take counter-terrorism measures and fight against drug trafficking and organized crime along the Iran-Afghanistan border.

In December 2010, Iran and Afghanistan signed an agreement to promote mutual cooperation in a campaign against drug production and trafficking.
