Yemen army kills six al-Qaida militants

2011-03-26 22:42:26 GMT+7 (ICT)

SANAA (BNO NEWS) -- At least three al-Qaida militants were killed and six others were apprehended on Saturday in southern Yemen, the official Saba news agency reported.

The militants were killed in clashes with security forces in the province of Abyan. The province's security director Abdul-Razaq al-Marwani confirmed the number.

The Yemen Post, however, reported that seven suspected militants were killed.
Private sources told the Post that an armed group attacked a security checkpoint in Amain, Lawder district, which resulted in the killing of the members and the burning of their vehicle and motorcycle.

The sources added that the militants laid siege on Lawder hospital after the staff refused to hand the dead bodies to them.

Al-Qaida attacks against the army and the security forces have increased in Yemen's south and east provinces since the rise of protests demanding President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down.

Washington has been pressuring the government to focus on fighting the Yemen-based al-Qaida regional wing.
