No Flood Impact Seen on Songkran Festival

The tourism authority is confident that the flood crisis in the South will not have any impact on the annual Songkran festival.

Over two billion baht are expected to circulate during the festive period.

Tourism Authority of Thailand, or TAT, Governor Surapol Svetasreni said during a press conference to promote the 2011 Songkran festival that 13 provinces, such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Sukothai, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla and Phuket, will host events to celebrate the festival under the sponsorship of the TAT.

Surapol also expressed confidence that current flooding in southern Thailand will only be a short-term problem.

He added that while parts of some southern provinces are inundated, other areas of those provinces can host events to attract tourists and generate revenue as usual.

The festival will be held between April 9 and 17 in 13 provinces.

More than one million tourists are expected to attend events across the country and over two billion baht are expected to be circulated during the festive period.
