Motorized Bicycles

Hi

I found out about 49cc and 66cc engine kits (everything you need to motorize a bicycle), made in China, costing between 150 to 200US$.

There are some really cool project bicycles on the net (http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2008/10/14/honda-50-powered-vintage-bicycle-project/

I especially like the Board Track replicas.

Does anyone know what the legal situation is to drive one of those? I imagine they're classified as normal bicycles...

Of course they're made for town and I don't think I would get in any trouble here, but just to know where I would stand if I actually start building one.

Would be a nice and inexpensive project for the rainy season. What do you think?smile.gif

Really nice!Thats what i think!

I think depends on where you live, here in chiang mai iwould ride around town without expecting to much problems.

Just yesterday got stopped at a roadblock near the airport, had no helmet,no passport,no driving license, the bike(very old honda dream)has no registration or whatever and the police guy just wanted me to write my name on the ticket....

i think its a cool project,so do it and keep us updated!

peace

Roadwingbike seems to sell the complete bikes, but I'll try to contact them to see if they have just the engine kit for sale, too.

I just started researching, but I found this very great forum

Here is a list of useful links

This shop ships to Thailand (not all of them do), using paypal and has good prices

and this is an awesome bike build thread

The problem seems to be finding the bicycle now. I've been to a big shop today with lots of used bicycles. The only one that seemed good for my project was an old, rusty mountain/street bike...and they wanted 7.500Bht for it!blink.gif No way!! I'm sure I can find something better...and far cheaper than that around Chonburi.

These 2 stroke engines are a bit delicate, but with the right maintenance and thoughtful usage (not racing it) it shouldn't be too big a problem. I read about guys who rode more than 3000miles without problems. Spare parts are super cheap in case you need replacement. Cylinder head for example is about 20$.

Cool

They wont be road legal, but so are not the 50cc yammys and Hondas all over town. Nobody will ever care about a powered bicycle not being road legal
