Meningitis Shot

Featured Replies

Does anyone know where to get a meningitis shot and what it might costs? I was thinking the Red Cross on Rama 4.

The Thai Red Cross Clinic is an excellent low cost source for vaccination.

There are several different types of meningitis vaccine and they protect against different types of meningitis. Do you know which you need?

Sheryl,

Thanks for your reply. I didnt realize their were that many choices! Actually I dont need the shot. It is for my son who will be attending the Univ of Maryland in the Fall and it is required for all students who are living on campus unless they wish to sign the meningitis vaccine waiver. The shot can be had at the university medical center for $130. I thought since our son will be visiting Bangkok next month he might as well get it here probably for lot less the $130. Or just sign the waiver and not get it at all. The shot they give at the university requires one injection and is 85 - 90 % protective against strains A,C,Y and W-135, but not type B.

I'm assuming the Red Cross Clinic has competent "counseling" as to which vaccination is needed for when and where. If not, and of course even if so, I can also recommend the Travel Medicine/Shot Clinic at BNH on Soi Convent in Bangkok. They recently (in the past year or so) opened the clinic on the ground floor, just to the right as you enter through the hospital front doors.

On my last BNH visit (for follow-up to my last back injury) I took along my yellow vaccination "passport," and talked to a doctor in the clinic, and after finding almost all my vaccinations were overdue boosters, had an informative discussion about various vaccinations -- what was recommended, what was available (and not) in Thailand, etc. Even though I was a walk-in with no appointment, the doctor took as much time as needed to answer my questions, and provide information beyond what I had asked.

As a side note, I was disappointed to know that the shot clinic doctor at Bumrungrad, who had given me the initial rounds of vaccinations and the yellow passport, had not followed through with her promise to e-mail me when boosters came due.

For a college student, it would be the meningococcal vaccines, specific for that type of meningitis of which there are occasional epidemics on college campuses.

The meningococcal vaccines available in Thailand is imported from abroad so unlikely to cost much less than the price you mention, especially if you have to go to a private hospital to find it. Suggest you call the Red Cross Clinic and ask if they have it/the cost. 02 256 4107-8 x 208-9.

I finally got around to going to the Red Cross Immunization and Travel Clinic on Rama 4 and the price for the Meningococcaol vaccine shot is B1,200.
