PM expects new government in office in August

BANGKOK, April 21 - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday reaffirmed that the general election will be held as planned and that he expected the formation of the new government to take place in August.

The prime minister made his remarks after the coalition partner Chartthai Pattana Party indicated that the election will be held June 26 and the new government will be formed Sept 3.

Mr Abhisit earlier pledged to dissolve the House in early May and called for a general election in June or July.

Mr Abhisit said the information disclosed by the coalition party is merely a prediction as he has not yet informed the coalition parties of the date for the new election.

"Personally, I want to see the new government in August and I’m confident the election will take place as the Senate is expected to complete vetting an election organic bill by next week," the prime minister said.

Mr Abhisit said, however, that he could not guarantee that the election will definitely run smoothly as untoward, unexpected incidents might occur.

"But I believe the chance of [any] unconstitutional change is very slim," he said.

Following the planned video link of fugitive ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on April 23 unveiling his policy initiatives during the Puea Thai Party's campaign policy kickoff, Mr Abhisit said the ousted premier has the right to do so but the people themselves will decide whether or not it is appropriate, as the party may link the election to political disorder and conflict. August Cabinet means the dirty work of getting the army list in place is done, and the finally sign off gets done either by the new cabinet or the caretaker... LIkely I suspect the caretaker is the idea. Set the list in stone, even if accidentally PTP gets a slight minority advantage.

You'd do the same. It's called politics.
