out of interest, had I not invested into Samui, I would be looking to get the <deleted> out of here

thing is where is a good alternative, I like Bangkok but don't want to live in a city, I like Phuket but not sure it's actually to busy for me, any suggestion?

Sorry to see you are getting the usual crop of stupid replies.

I am in very much the same situation. Invested here and want to move on. I would rather be looking at Samui from a distance. At the end of the day i wonder whether a two month tour of some of the up and coming areas of Vietnam might be worthwhile. One things for sure....as far as Samui is concerned the horse has bolted and with Bangkok Airways given impunity to seemingly do/charge what they want i see no future for the place which is sad because i have great memories of the island.

people whine and moan about samui but we all come back. this might be as good as it gets. spend a couple of weks months years in london then u'll find samui one of the best places on this earth.

it has its faults but i has character. Infact what would we complain about if they fixed everything. we would not know what to do. the forum would be empty.

As for phuket it is just one thai to work for forang provence. yes u can get everything there and there are allot od malls and this and that but it is not much cheaper plus a bit of beach land would probably be the worst investment ever.

there are some new units well new in the fact that noone has moved into them yet but they have been there for about 2 years. unsold on the beach front in patong.

i mean who wants to buyt a house in a tsuami zone.

hotel . ok because u r turning money over every ight but units for offices or houses.

also there r more police in phuket and lady boys which is no for me

I know what you are saying but paying "boutique island" prices for everything whilst sitting through ANOTHER power cut just does'nt add up. It has'nt been a tropical island for years. Its an over priced tourist haven with totally <deleted> infastructure.

I wish it would make its mind up which of these it wants to be but i do know that if i was paying 5000 baht plus a night enduring power cut with these temperatures i'd be well fuc#ed off.

I was in Samui for the first time last month for 7 days, and while It was not my favorite place I have been to in Thailand so far, I would hardly call it a "dump". I saw alot of screwed up buildings and construction going on but I just figured alot of it had to do with the flood. I didin't smell any sewage but then again I didin't spend much time in Chaweng. I didin't like all the pushy Indian tailors and like alot of places in Thailand I thought the infrastructure could use some work. I took the boat up to Koh Phangan and walked along Haad Rin Beach, I thought THAT was a dump. Singha bottles and crap laying over all the place and dirty hippies, but then again it was the day after a full moon. All in all I liked Samui but I think I am going to try Koh Chang next time.

Its not just BA.....ridiculous hotel prices...expensive restaurants....exorbitant taxi fares...double pricing on songtheuws....bordering on nonsensical in Chaweng....stinking sewage....dirty beaches and water no good for swimming...jetskis....lack of effective policing....dubious and expensive hospital care....dangerous roads...power cuts....burglaries....and on and on.....

Yes you have more freedom than in other parts of the Kingdom but at least some of these issues need to be addressed.

Sadly, that perfectly sums the place up. Quite why anyone would want to move here is beyond me. I guess the just did'nt bother to check out many other places.

BTW, does anyone know what time we'll be having a power cut tonight? :(

i agree 5000 baht a night would go allot further in other parts of thailand.

the govement water is what starting to bother me.

i just keep seeing large amounts of traffic. i just don't know where everyone is going. i mean sometimes it can take 10 minutes to cross the road.

plenty of people here. just wondering what they are up to and why they are in a hurry to get somewhere.

is it a savival race

also i can spend 5000 baht in one day and have nothing to show for it. unlike bangkok or even phuket. if i withraw 5000 baht i am shocked to fined the btter half of that 5 k still in my wallet.

something is wrong

we dont all come back, some of us pass through on or way to other places.

Bangkok Air terminal to Seatran Dock to Phangan.

I dont even use the Lomprayah, because the drive exposes me to more of the island than i care to see.

samui is a dump, the only upside is it actually makes people appreciate koh phangan all the more once they get there.

the majority of my renters who have spent spend a week on samui arrive in chaloklum and state they wish they had skipped samui entirely.

That must be the combination of didn't know that Chaweng is that commercialised, but paid for the booking already, later at chaloklum by chance, without knowing that there are better beaches on KPG as wellcustomers.

Sorry, i find much of your reply incomprehensible, especially the latter half.

I find many folks divide their holiday between the two, one week on Samui, one on Phangan. Repeat customers return for 2-3 weeks and avoid Samui altogether.

I also find that people who tend to arrive in Chaloklum have done their research and are not there by chance.

Yes there are better beaches than Chaloklum -- Haad Khom, Mae Haad, Haad Salad, all within a 10 minute drive. Thong Nai pan is a short boat ride around the corner, Bottle Beach even closer. I believe Salad did very well on a trip advisor poll recently, for what that is worth.

For my money Chaloklum is not unlike Bophut once was, one can only hope some care is taken. that it does not develop too quickly. I do have a soft spot for Fisherman's villages

Sadly, even on Phangan, the quality of your experience can vary radically depending on whether you turn left or right when exiting Thongsala.

From http://www.travelbag.co.uk/Holidays

'Holiday offers

Asia

Phuket Holidays £489

Koh Samui Holidays £659

Hua Hin & Cha Am £499

Krabi £519'

This is for flight and hotel accommodation - 10 nights - 3 star basic from the UK - Difference is greater for 4 or 5 star /

Koh Samui is GBP 170 more expensive than Phuket & I expect all travel agents carry the same price difference / This can only be down to Bangkok Airways /

After all the problems samui has had this last year I think Bangkok Airways should at least match Phuket prices - They have done a lot for Samui in the past and now they need to step up - We need to be cheaper than Phuket ! Especially after last years plane accident and this years floods -

I have just one simple thing to say live your life and quit moaning, whining about everything else. You do know foreigners have no status or say with matters regarding so many things in thailand. I know complaining makes you feel good on thaivisa but in real world terms it falls on deaf ears.

Yes don't stand and fight...when you can run away!

I like Samui despite its many problems....some self inflicted...others through greed....but the freedom remains enogh for me.

Would still like to see the place improve...but for me mostly that would be seen as regression for others. ;)

Well let me see......

Firstly, that sort of banal witless juvenile stereotyped response of "why dont you leave" is iritating enough but what really does irk is when someone like you does'nt even take the time to read the thread properly before replying.

I've already said my money is tied up and until i can release funds i don't have the option to leave. But hey, thanks for your realy interesting well thought out post.

What people like you good self don't seem to grasp is that its not one big pissing contest about Samui. its simply a discussion about the reasons why some have become disenchanted with the island, not a personal dig at people like yourself that still like it.

Yes, well here we go again. :D I have to inform you that this is a topic about Samui failing to get into the top 25 destinations. So, unlike your goodself, the rest of us are actually on topic discussing why this is. You might translate this as actually caring about the place rather than strollng around in your rose tinted specs as it slowy (or rapidly) deteriorates ;)

"a complaining customer is your best customer"

keeping that axiom in mind, samui certainly has the potential to be a regular stop on the top 25 lists. it, like nearly every business in thailand, just needs to be managed better.

I made the move from Samui to Krabi last year and enjoy it over here. I do miss the madness of Samui at times and love going back, but Krabi still has a beach front lifestyle and is much more relaxed. The foreign property market is really just beginning here so 'most' prices are reasonable still.

last time i was there, about 5 years ago i thought it was strange very few public access roads to the main beach

every one walked through the various bungalows and resorts etc to get to the beach

i thought it would only be a matter of time before the owners stop public access or start to charge for it

has it happened yet?

luckily i rented and after 9 years made the move, now live 8 km east of pattaya, absolutly great, small village, at least 30% cheaper lakes and mountains all around, BKK airport 1 hour away ot 129 baht on non stop air con bus. coast down towards rayong beat Samui hands down, navy owned NO development.

Mabparachan area luvin it should have done it years ago, mile after mile of beach road, mile after mile of good tarmac roads.
