Hi

(Have spent a bit looking through various threads, but it just side tracks me onto other interesting things)

I'm looking for advice to setup a "fail-safe" internet connection.

When we are at the house up country we have a decent AIS connection through a USB stick modem. Though occasionally it gives me some grief.

We don't have any landline. A neighbor friend uses a different provider, though I forget which company and will find out next time we are at the house.

The idea is to use 2 x USB stick/aircard modems, each accessing a different ISP. So, that should the Primary ISP link drop off, the Secondary ISP link will automatically take-over. Have read about load-balancing etc, but the main idea is to have a fighting chance in keeping the internet connection "alive".

Have read a little about this "cradlepoint" device, http://www.wirelessn...og39kiigncq5ca4

Any readers attempted a similar setup? Any advice greatly received.

Thanks

I use that exact router.

The eth0 is connected to a provider that has cat5 cables strung up everywhere off a satellite connection. USB0 has an EV-DO modem hooked up. I have the system set to round-robin between the two which helps with torrenting tv shows. The XBox360 has all its packets sent through the satellite connection since surprising here (Iraq) it has less latency than the CDMA connection.

When the power goes out to the guy providing the hardwire (usually a generator swap) the USB stick keeps chugging along; same-same as if there's some sort of wireless connection problem.

I also keep the wi-fi up since I have a NAS that is available to whomever (figure if I can keep files up for neighbours to get that should reduce the bandwidth they want to download them and leave more for me!) and only allocate MY MAC addresses for permission to access the internet proper.

You mentioned your router has USB0, does it then have a USB1 ?

And if yes, will it work with 2 x USB modems (Edge/CDMA, i think! - not at the house at the moment)

You mentioned Iraq, then did you buy your "cradlepoint" somewhere other than Thailand?

I will need to find a supplier in LOS. I wasted a couple of hours touring Fortune IT City place in BKK looking and asking.

Yes; the router has 2x USB, one RJ-45, and one ExpressCard. IIRC the wired ports on the back are only 10/100, but the wireless is "N" and it has 3 antenna.

The MBR-1000 I have was bought from the States and shipped APO.

I actually came across the router reading the phuket.me site; seems like you can find them in LOS but perhaps need them shipped to your house? It's not that cheap of an option (at some 10K THB), but the options it offer are really good.

**edit**

The article describing it is a bit old and you CAN use multiple connections simulatenously (as I alluded to in my first post). If Thailand ever gets Wi-MAX there's even drivers available for those modems. Be warned that the USB1 connection is a tight fit between the antenna and the power plug; make sure that your modem won't be jammed in crooked or something.

Thanks again.

Seems my company firewall has decided I am not fit to view the first link (phuket.me)

But ok on the second link, and I got their number and address so may pay them a visit next time in BKK or just ship it home.

Cheers
