If someone went to a Thai hospital, with no insurance, and just paid cash for the services, does any of that medical information get back to a U.S. health insurance company? In other words, if someone had a serious medical condition in Thailand, will U.S. health insurance companies have any access to that information? If the U.S. health insurance company somehow found out someone lived in Thailand in the past, would that insurance company have any success in finding out about the medical records that may still be on file inside Thailand?

Thanks!

Legally, a hospital can release records only with your consent.

When you make an insurance claim, you usually sign a form that among other things gives the company the right to access your medical records. Many hospital consent forms also include language that allows them to release records/information to insurance companies.

Check the language on anything you are asked to sign, and do not sign anything that includes such a clause. I don';t think that will be difficult in Thailand, your difficulty may come later if you make an insurance claim in the US as to do so you may have to consent to release of all records related to that particular claim and condition. Whether a past treatment in Thailand meets that criterion would depend on the circumstances.

Practically speaking though, I should think it very unlikely that a US insurance company would invest the time and resources to search years-old medical records in Thailand unless there was suspicion of serious insurance fraud.

If by any chance your concern relates to HIV, the Thai Red Cross Anonymous Clinic would provide guaranteed anonymity. In addition to HIV and other STI testing, it can also do basic physical check-ups including things like lipid panels.
