French fighter plane crashes in western Afghanistan

2011-05-24 19:11:55 GMT+7 (ICT)

KABUL (BNO NEWS) -- A French fighter plane crashed in western Afghanistan on Tuesday, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said, but there were no casualties.

The accident happened at around 10.30 a.m. local time in Farah province of western Afghanistan. "Both pilots were quickly recovered unharmed," an ISAF spokesperson said, giving no other details. "The crash site has been secured."

ISAF gave no indication about the cause of the accident, but did not rule out the possibility of hostile fire. "The reason for the crash is currently unknown. An investigation into the incident has been launched," an ISAF spokesperson said.

On April 23, one U.S. soldier was killed when his helicopter crashed in the Alah Say district of Kapisa province. Another service member who was also on board survived the accident.

Before that, in September 2010, nine NATO troops were killed and others were injured when an ISAF helicopter crashed in southern Afghanistan.
