my girlfriend will soon apply for uk settlement. she has 2 children. all 3 will hopefully come and live with me.

in section 4 of the form VAF4A i can write their names, and details ( age 7 and 9 ),

Q7 is to be completed for travellers / applicants under 18.

i dont think i need to write the children's names in Q7. am i right?

You will need to fill in a separate application for each visa, including the children. The children will usually get the same immigration status as the mother if you can show they are totally dependent on her.

Much of the information needed for the application is the same so my wife and step-daughters applications were linked and processed together.

This was not a problem in our case because my step-daughters father was killed in a motor bike accident before she was born but if the father is still about there may be issues.

It never hurts to put more information down. You can enter their details but clearly state that there is an application being made for each child to settle with their mother.

I am sure section 7 does not need to be filled in on your wife's application (only for applicants under 18 yrs) but will need to be filled out in the children's applications. A VAF4A needs to be filled out for each of them. Needless to say there is a fee for each one!!

thanks, so i will have to complete 3 separate applications. i think i can start filling the applications in now can I, even though i wont apply until about 10th July - as long as i log into the application at least every 6 days and save it - which will refresh it. then nearer the time submit the application.

did you print a copy out and hand in with your application ( and submit online ), or just submit online?

i thought i could just use the same application for all 3 :), but obviously not ( i know i have to pay 3 fees )

We went through this nearly two years ago but as far as I know the only real change is to the fees charged! If things have moved on I am sure someone will correct me! As far as I know the on-line bit of the application helps you fill the form in but you then have to print out the form to take with you.

Fill in the forms on-line - make sure that if you take a break that it is stored on their system or you will have to restart or retrace your steps. There are set places that you can save the application. I am not sure how long they are stored on the system but I seem to think it was only about a week so worth checking.

Once completed print them out and take the hard copy with supporting documentation to the visa processing centre for checking. There are lots of posts on how to do this in detail. If in doubt ask! Members of this forum are generally very helpful and some are very much the experts.

We had to do two forms, one for my wife the other for step-daughter. Much of the information was the same for each of them but everyone has to apply for an individual visa. Dependent children are generally entitled to the same immigration status as the applying parent.

We did cross-reference the two applications and provided one set of documents (bank statements etc) but had to add odd bits for our daughter. My mother-in-law was unable to care for our step-daughter and her father had died so I wrote a letter explaining the situation. This was accepted by the ECO without question. Her birth certificate did not have his details on so this was one complication we didn't have to deal with.

My advice is to get the application filled in as early as you can.

hi, i am now completing the form VAF4A form for my girlfriend's daughter.

purpose of application - settlement

then it asks type of application - the only relevant answer there is;

child or other dependent of settled person ( is this the right one?) ( ''of settled person'' part is confusing me )

Also, when you do come to submit your supporting docs at VFS and pay the fees, make sure you pay with three seperate banker's drafts/cheques - not one lump sum.

One for each application.

We made that mistake and they wouldn't accept it.

Currently £972 by post or £1350 in person for the main applicant, plus £486 by post or £675 in person for each child under 18 included in the application.

In two years time? Who knows; start saving!

When we started the settlement process 18 months ago the cost for my daughters ILR (from memory) would have been an additional £90 on top of her mothers ILR fee. Now £486! Hows that for inflation?

I dread to think what it will be in 2 years time!
