Thai Daughter With British Citizenship - How To Use Her Thai Citizenship

Featured Replies

I have a 25 year-old Thai daughter thru marriage who was granted British citizenship and passport when we were living in the Middle East. She is now living back in Thailand but unfortunately entered the country on her UK passport. Somehow immigration knew that she also had a Thai passport and she was told that if she used her Thai passport again she would either have to give up her UK passport or possibly lose her Thai ID card. Neither are good options.

I have read a number of forums and don't beleive what the immigration officer (in Phuket) said but we now have a problem with her being in Thailand on the UK passport (under visa rules) and can't figure out how to get her out on the UK passport then and back in on a Thai passport. Her Thai passport expired last year so she will have to get a new one which should be no problem, but if she tries to enter Thailand on a new Thai passport with no exit stamp or immigration card I'm sure will get problems.

Any ideas how to get around this problem? Talking to immigration in Phuket has so far been a waste of time.

Exit as normal using UK passport and on return (by air to Bangkok would be best) use Thai passport. They will notice no card had been issued on exit but that can be explained and she should be allowed to enter using it (ask for supervisor if have someone, like before, giving false information). Once done always us Thai passport to enter/exit (only showing UK passport to airline if a visa issue for travel). As her Thai citizenship is by birth they can not take her ID or Passport.

As Lop said, exit on the UK passport on which she entered.

She can return to Thailand on her expired Thai passport and be stamped in on that.

Thanks a lot. I thought this may be the only way to exit on UK and try and re-enter on Thai passport, but how would you explain no exit card in the Thai passport? Are they going to ask how she left the country in the first place?

Also not sure how she could re-enter on an expired Thai passport. Surely she wuld have to get a new one first.
Have a look at This. Use the drop down menus.

National Thailand (TH) /Destination Thailand (TH)

Thailand (TH)

Passport required.

- Expired passports issued to nationals of Thailand are accepted.

Passport Exemptions:

- Holders of a Certificate of Identity issued to nationals of

Thailand.

VISA NOT REQUIRED.

You can always return to your home country on an expired passport but the question of why no card is easy enough to answer as she departed on another passport. There is no Thai law that prevents having dual nationality (although some are not aware of that; those in supervisor positions should be).
