watutsi
Soul Music was the sound of my youth.I have embraced the best of many genres of music over the years but nothing ever did it for me in the same way. I have recently discovered most of my old vinyl collection on You Tube and i am still amazed how much my mood can be transformed by the likes of Darrel Banks : Lorraine Ellison; Curtis; Otis etc. I'm wondering if there are any like minded soles/souls out there who would like to meet up for a beer. If we have one passion in common maybe there is more. PM me.
littleboylost
I was a club DJ in the UK from the late 60's to mid 70's. Soul, R&B call it what you want but that's what I played. Today's music just doesn't compare. Where are you? I am in Phuket.

tutsiwarrior
watutsi...now that sounds all right...sounds like tutsi's soul brother... it's 2002 at a party in Abu Dhabi and someone brings out a 'big box' karaoeke machine with a percent grading to the original song with all western selections and I look at de menu an' it gots 'I've been lovin' you too long' by Otis... I was fueled up an' stood up to de microphone and cut loose and I had a 99%...any better it woulda been ol' Otis hisself... 'wid you my life....has been so wonderful....I doan wanna stop now....' (bring in the horn section cresendo...)...I useta use that one in Valentine's day messages to various girl fren's...the perceived romantic message from the unsuspecting always got me a special treat in response Edited June 25, 2011 by tutsiwarrior
xen
I have always loved Soul , particularly Deep Soul / Southern Soul. With the advent of the internet, so much more of it is accessible thru various sites. I grew up in Oz and there , nobody was really interested in anything more than Mowtown and it was difficult to collect but in recent years my collection has really grown because of the net . occaisionally there are are some new artists that can stand with some of the older ones - i was thinking Eli "paperboy "Reed for example . Mate, i could talk all day about this subject. Perhaps you should check out Southern Soul radio . Edited June 25, 2011 by xen

Traxster
What is 'soul music' ? I mean,I'm from that age when 'soul music' first appeared in New Zealand and Australia and I have never been quite sure exactly what 'soul music' is. If you ask ten people ,'what is 'soul music' you will get 10 different answers. Someone once described 'soul music' to me as,someone who sings from the heart, but that would probably include anyone who ever opened their mouth to sing, wouldn't it ? So what is 'soul music' ? What is it about 'soul music' that sets it apart from any and every other style of music ?. And who was/is the best soul singer ever ??. BTW.........I hear, loud & clear, what you're saying about YouTube............Aahh the memories ! Edited June 26, 2011 by Traxster

I agree that" music from the soul" can be applied to any musical style ; Sinatra ;Opera etc. however in this context we are of course talking about the mixing together of ,The Blues, electricity, and the church [gospel] It is a complete mystery to me why people like the music that they do,and why so many British teenagers in the 60's adopted a music that was created an ocean away and from totally alien culture Best soul singer ever ; Not going to go there depends on the mood ; Otis ; Picket; A Neville ; Curtis ; Cooke etc I will go for "most soulful record ever" - "Stay with me baby" Lorraine Ellison Thankyou to the others that replied and for the links To "Endure" If only, i know all these clubs but i lived too far away To "Littleboy lost" I'm in Bangkok

By Victory Monument, do you mean the one over near the "notorious" Kao San road by any chance, or the big one? Wouldn't mind going along myself. Good music, let alone good soul music, is very hard to find these days. Must be my age, as I just can't get anything out of all this new stuff. I live about 30 mins away from Kao San road, so that would be handy if it is to be there.

Oh yeah, take the gf for the boogie steps... Groove me baby!! Great idea ,i would love to walk into a bar in Sukhumvit where the music made me feel good, instead of the same old same old, and worse. If there are more people out there who would maybe like to meet up say once a month where the only soundtrack is soul /r&b and the like, speak up ! Then we can try and find a suitable bar,if enough people are interested.

You have just made/posted on this forum, the first and only proposition this year, that not only has me interested, but actually has me feeling excited. I am 100% into getting together with a group of like minded folks, for what could and should be, a memorably satisfying evening out for all who turn up. Dam good idea indeed! Would my bringing along a USB stick, containing some of my own collection of the sort of music we are talking about (Gary Moor - Still got the Blues or Joe Bonamassa - Sloe Gin etc.), be a good idea too? I would very much appreciate a "PM" from you, when all the details as to when and where are ironed out. Also, if there is any way I could help you and contribute in some way, towards getting this possible event closer to being an actuality, don't be shy of letting me know. Cheers. thebom. For those very same reasons too, I would think that there should be enough people interested, if we can some how arrange a "quality nights entertainment" for us all? I may be a bit "long in the tooth" for those "boogie steps" you mention, but the music and good company would be a very welcome change. Lets do it! endure
The Wheel was my favourite club although the Mojo in Sheffield (owned by a young Pete Stringfellow) used to have live shows on a Sunday as well as the Saturday all-nighters.
