Details leak out about iPhone 5

New York - It's only a few months until the newest generation of iPhone hits stores and details about its features are slowly leaking out.

According to the usually well-informed Wall Street Journal, the fifth iteration of the best-selling smartphone will be thinner than its predecessor and have an eight-pixel - not five - camera. The paper quoted Apple's suppliers, since the company does not manufacture the iPhone itself.

Two weeks ago, the Bloomberg news agency had reported about the improved camera, as well as about a faster processor. Apple has remained, as usual, mum about its new product, refusing to comment. But the Wall Street Journal says the new phone will be released in this quarter. Bloomberg, citing informed sources, reported September.

Speculation has been ongoing for months about when the successor to the hugely successful iPhone 4 might hit stores. Until now, new models have been released around midyear, meaning the iPhone 5 is behind schedule.

But Bloomberg reported that Apple wanted to wait until its new iOS5 operating system was ready to go. That's been promised for the autumn.

However, the Wall Street Journal reports that the iPhone 5 is especially complicated to build, because it's so thin. That could also lead to delays.

The iPhone 4 was already thinner than the 3GS. The new iPhone will also reportedly include a new wireless chip from Qualcomm. Until now, those chips have been produced by Infineon. Officially, Apple has made no comments about its supplier. Infineon has sold its wireless chip business to Intel, which is getting into smartphones. If the company has indeed lost its contract, that would be a big blow.

There were 18.7 million iPhones sold in the first quarter of 2011 and sales expectations are very high for the new phone, reported the Wall Street Journal, citing an informed source. Projections are for sales of 25 million units by the end of 2011

I have heard that the i, i, i, i, I have heard, i,iPhone,i, g,g,g,g,great, they.

Seriously, the videos I have watched on youtube with people walking around using their iPhones or pads has been priceless. We should have more of it.

I, myself have had first hand witness to these ibloopers. Going up the escalator at a local shopping centre, the iPed (Person using any i product when walking, brain in neutral of course) in front of me was busy tapping away. When she got to the top of the escalator, she stepped off and stopped. I tried to avoid her, but as there were other people behind me and the escalator just keeps going, I knocked into her. The i product went flying, so did the girl. I just walked away laughing. Should have been on youtube.

What I am waiting for are all the suits against Apple for the volume allowed on the ipods. I wonder how many people will go deaf using them.

When are they going to have a decent battery for the Iphone ?

They already have, since the iPhone 4. Read about it - nobody complains about battery life anymore, and many places rave about it. Absolutely destroys any Android device in the battery life stakes, and with normal to medium use it lasts about 2 days.

So yeah my old Nokia lasted almost a week - but then again, that old Nokia didn't do anything either. It didn't check emails, have push email, allow me to browse the web and use twitter and facebook, and a million other things that I do with my phone all the time.

The latest rumor is that they'll make the 3GS the budget option and sell it for $300 unlocked. We'll see soon enough...

Get a "Mophie Juice Pack" (google it) .... it fits like a glove and I can run my iPhone for days using it.

Don't need it - never had any issues with the iPhone 4 battery life. If it gets through a whole day of heavy use, it's ok with me. For example, using the map to find my way while simultaneously holding a skype phone conference and chatting via instant messenger, checking some stuff on the internet, and now and then popping out and tethering the laptop, all while running around Kuala Lumpur. I love the phone since that day. I dropped it a few times on the asphalt too (running and typing isn't that great an idea) - never missed a beat.

What I do need though is a LIFEPROOF case, it's finally shipped after months of waiting, and is on its way to Thailand. I destroyed my old 3GS by riding through a tropical thunderstorm and now I am extra paranoid whenever I go on a bike trip. LIFEPROOF makes your iPhone 4 MIL-SPEC water- dust- and shock-proof (supposedly), while not being a lot bigger than the iPhone itself. Previously, the only waterproof cases were huge sealed boxes...
