Bali bomb suspect Umar Petek extradited from Pakistan to Indonesia

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Indonesia's National Police on Thursday confirmed that Bali bomb suspect Umar Petek arrived in the nation's capital after being extradited from Pakistan.

National Police spokesman Inspector General Anton Bachrul Alam confirmed that Petek had arrived at Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusuma Airport at around 7 a.m. local time and was being sent to the Kelapa Dua Police Mobile Brigade jail in East Jakarta, the Antara news agency reported.

Petek, a member of the Southeast Asian Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist group, was wanted in the United States, Australia, and Indonesia on terrorism charges. He is believed to have participated in the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 202 people - mostly Australians and seven Americans. The U.S. Rewards for Justice Program had placed a $1 million reward for information leading to his arrest.

Despite rumors that he had been killed in the Philippines in September 2006, Petek was captured on January 25 in Abbotabad, Pakistan with possession of approximately $1 million.

Ansyaad Mbai, the chairman of Indonesia's National Counter-terrorism Agency, said a special anti-terror detachment team flew with Petek from Pakistan to Indonesia to ensure tight security measures around the suspected terrorist.

Petek fled Indonesia in 2003 with the help of Abdullah Sonata and his organization. Also known as Abdul Ghoni Abu Syeikh, and Umar Arab, Petek is also blamed for several bombings carried out in Indonesia since 1999.
