For the second time I'm taking my Thai girlfriend with me on a holiday to the Netherlands. She has been granted a 90-day tourist visa, and we are planning to tour around Europe. She would also like to visit London, and I was thinking of taking her on one of those 4 to 5 day London packages.

At my request she quit her job a few months ago and is fully dependent on me for financial support. This fact seems to make applying for a visa in BKK an unsurmountable obstacle. I've consulted the UK visa application procedure online and the catalogue of requirements made me stop reading halfway the 6-page list of required supporting documents. Not only is the list immense, you are also supposed to provide a translation of any supporting documents that are not in English! Each translated document must contain confirmation that it is an accurate translation of the original document, date of the translation, the translator's full name and signature, and the translator's contact details. All her documents are in Thai and all my papers are in Dutch, so all in all it would be a very long-winded and costly exercise.

I'm therefore thinking of making the visa application at the British Embassy in Amsterdam.

Has anybody gone this route before?

She must apply in Thailand. If she applies in The Netherlands it asks "What is her status in the country of applying" if she is a tourist she will not get it

She cannot apply for a UK visa in The Netherlands while there as a visitor.

All UK visa applications must be made in the country where the applicant is resident.

Just like Schengen applications.

Even if she could apply in The Netherlands, the requirements would be exactly the same as if she applied in Thailand.

Obtaining a UK visit visa is not as hard as you seem to think. Indeed, less evidence is required than when applying for a Schengen visa!

Have a read of UK visit visa basics. Although it is mainly aimed at Brits, some of the information and links may be of use to you.

Well, this is what the UK Border Agency has to say:

Applying for a UK visa if you have temporary permission to stay

If you have temporary permission to stay (for example, as a visitor) in the country where you are currently living, you cannot apply for most types of UK visa in that country. You can only apply for:

  • a visitor visa
  • a Tier 5 (Temporary worker - creative and sporting) visa
  • an EEA family permit

And yes, I did read the UK Visa Basics before posting. Frankly speaking I didn't find it to have relevance to my situation.

Following your link and then clicking on Applying for a UK visa if you have temporary permission to stay does indeed give the information you have quoted; which is the opposite of information on other embassy and UKBA websites.

So, if your girlfriend wants to submit her application in Amsterdam, go for it. But as already said; the requirements will be the same whether she applies in Amsterdam or Bangkok.

BTW, can you provide a link to the "6-page list of required supporting documents" you mention in your OP as I've never seen such a thing.

There is a supporting documents guide and it does run to 6 pages, but as it says at the beginning of the guide

It is not a list of documents that you must submit. We do not expect you to provide all of the documents listed below, it is for you to decide which documents are most relevant to your application.

Reading the guide you will also see that it covers all category of visitor. So if your girlfriend wishes to visit the UK as a tourist she can ignore the irrelevant parts, e.g. those pertaining to sports visitors. This means you can stop halfway down page three.

It says "If you have a temporary permission to stay in the country you are currently living, I think the word "living" needs clarification, she is not living in the Netherlands she is visiting.

I think then mean "residing" instead of "living".
