Last night after work, a hit on the driving range and a quick change I went back into Silom for drinks with some of my work buddies.. Just along convent outside Starbucks a youngish looking farang stopped me asking for the tourist police, I asked him what happened and the pretty classic story comes out that he has had his bag stolen has reported this to the police to no avail as he now has missed his flight and needs 500eur to rebook to a later one. Ive been running my own company here 8yrs and am well travelled around Asia, Europe and Africa and so naturally suspicious of strangers and such crap like this.

I am writing this post as a warning as this guy was quite believable, had a perfect fake stress and scared demeanour and generally came over as someone in real need of help. Of course I did not hand over any cash but I offered him to use my phone and was going to let him get online using a computer at my office which was just 20m away. The fact that I was obviously in control of this situation and my German and Thai staff were also onroute to the office made him lose his cool and run off.

He said he was from Germany and if true then must be Cologne area as sounds more French/Belgium, is about 180cm tall, light coloured shoulder length hair in a ponytail, dressed in cheap looking shorts, sneakers and tshirt and looks prob younger than he is. If you meet this little <deleted> then be careful as he is very plausible and must be a very experienced blagger. Get him to the boys in brown or slap him silly until he decides to f&£k off back to Europe..

Hi everybody, i'm a german tourist traveling around thailand.

Last afternoon while was in bangkok had my bag stolen

i've spent 5 hours at local police station trying to report the fact, this caused me to miss my flight back to germany...

later i was standing near Starbucks in silom asking for tourist police, wjhile i met a gang of foreigners and thais walking together,

i told my story and one of them offered me to use his mobile and internet at his near located office at the end of a dark soi, but as the whole group seems to escort me to the building

i recall the story of the movie Turistas and other tales about trafficking human organs, then while we was onroute to the "office" i lost my cool and run off.

The leader of the group is dressed as a wall street trader, and looks probably older than he is

If you meet that group then be careful as must be a very experienced hookers gang. Do not try to hit them because they surely have weapons nor to alert the boys in brown 'cause they probably been payed to non look and not to know nothing

Knowsitlike, don't take it as personally, this is an invented tale, but how less credible than yours?

What i want to say is: YES, the guy is probably a scammer, not a stealer

so, you opened up a new topic for him

try to figure out how many thousands of topics should be opened to update a 50 years history of thai scams...

Where do I convey that this scam is a rarity? It happens everyday. I wrote it only in hope the info might be useful, even if it stops one person losing money to that cretin it was worth it.

Janderton, i dont take any offence.. but I don't get your point. This is a medium for posting or asking for current information to the interest or benefit of anyone who reads it- If you are not interested in the title then don't waste your time reading. If everyone affected by a thai gem/gold etc scam wrote a quick summary and put it online with other such reports then I think it might be of considerable benefit. Take a look at Ron's from 2bangkok.com excellent archive on the gem shops.

i have no idea of what "filter type" thaivisa.com is using to classify a topic relevant enough to be posted on facebook wall and twitter

in a case like this, the bombastic title brings to ??

there's nothing illegal in that kind of daily "scam" (i'm not sure the word is appropriate), just a person asking money and another voluntarily give him.

but as seems like you want go on, you should now open a topic for every one:

thai lady with buffalo sick, street beggar , monk, fortune teller, charity pick up etc. you meet

and by the same criteria thaivisa would display them in every platform

p.s. don't forget to tell us how they look-tall-dress, and we would appreciate to hear for them too your advice "Get them to the boys in brown or slap them silly..."

don't take it as personal, is just a matter of consistency of conduct

hope you got my point now.

goodnight

Must be serious. The OP posts here on the average of twice a year and has already posted 3 times on this thread.

Guess he'll need to lurk for the rest of 2011 to avoid overload.

Nice one, thank you !!!!!

Possibly a bit too subtle.

Not sure if I smell an organised scam here, but last week I was stopped by a young farang girl (21-25), on Suriwong Road. She wanted to know where the tourist police are, complaining that she'd had her bag stolen.

There is a tourist police office at the end of Pat Pong 2, which I pointed out to her. She asked me for 500 baht so she could get a taxi to her hotel. I declined.

I then watched her walk past the tourist police office, and brazenly approach another man.

Hahahaha... Well this is amazing, first of all you are right I will now go back to lurk for the next few years until something comes along that I think might be amusing or interesting. All your comments on filters and suitability of topics etc well I leave it to TV to decide as I can't be arsed to look into your posts and start a stupid war of crap, get a life.

As for zukarotu, well I spent the rest of the night debating if this was indeed a scam or not with my chums, my conclusion was that it was and was a good one. If you are right and this is a very amazing coincidence then I have to commend you for helping him. It would be a shame I guess if we are all so cynical that we don't help people in need. Good on you, a free beer is available.

A female on an adjoining soi, wanted me to pay her money for "boom boom" - I don't know what that means.

It means she'll do an uncanny impression of Basil Brush for you.

The one thing that stands out is that you paid by CC. From posts on this forum, the CC has to be shown before a boarding pass can be issued. So not sure how he was able to board the flight.

well i did not explain a little details ..

But i never said that the boarding card was allready printed/booked ...

i paid using my visa card from bangkok bank . later on i copyed the passport from this guy .

Btw today i got a email incuding a western union number 10 digits so for me the case is closed i got my cash back ...

i dont even understand why everyone who ask for the police is a scammer ....

Back to work
