Get it down yer neck

After being involved in a heated argument today about the advantages/disadvantages of drinking beer either after being previously decanted into a glass or drinking beer straight from the bottle, we (that is, me and my ex-mate) would put the following forward for discussion.

Now, although we’ve all heard about the taste difference between decanted beer and ‘straight from the bottle’ beer, scientific studies have concluded that the former is preferential for the majority of tastes. However, there is the swilling factor which, up until now, as far as we know, has not been addressed. In layman’s terms “how fast can you get on the outside of that?”

The consensus was (eventually) that the following factors need to be considered (in order of importance – or thereabouts):

A. The diameter of the glass versus the diameter of the bottle neck (typically 65mm v 15 mm, respectively) – for the purpose of the test, 320 ml capacity, each container.

B. The flow restrictions caused by:

a) the friction coefficient of glass (bottle or glass).

:o the friction loss relative to the flowrate of the beer being discharged.

c) whether the flowrate is turbulent or laminar.

d) the Reynolds number (see c).

e) the pressure loss due to diameter differences.

f) the venturi effect of the beer leaving the container.

g) The vacuum effect, i.e. reverse suction (thanks vic).

C. Temperature:

a) temperature of the beer

:D ambient temperature

D. Specific gravity of the beer (minor influence).

E. Gas content of the beer (minor influence, unless the test ‘beer’ is Harp lager).

It was agreed that in order to conduct a meaningful experiment, there would have to be a number of constants:

a) the actual ability of the piss ‘ed to consume copious quantities of beer.

:D the size of the piss ‘ed’s mouth.

c) whether the piss ‘ed has a ‘clack’ or not.

d) who's paying for the beer.

e) the proximity of the toilet.

So, in conclusion, would anyone care to give a sensible equation that could be used to determine:

1. How fast can you get it down yer neck, bottle or glass?

2. Am I pissed again?

Well... cutting through the crap to your final question Yorky...

1. The glass is obviously quicker.

Dur primariralily (sp?) to the circumferential difference between the offered orifice (ie. the neck of th bottle vs the glass rim) and of course, the size of your mouth... :o

But... it's gotta be a glass that can contain the total volume of the bottle.

Or.... preferably more.

:D

2. Yes.

Ahhh what if it were a yard of lager? :D

2. Yes.

Do I detect a case of black pots and kettles here, JD?

I did proof read it before I posted... and decided that given the nature of the topic, to let it stand.

:D

Actually.. I ahve had a few... :o

Well, in Texas, we never put beer in a glass - drink it straight out of the bottle.

Tastes better... :o

Luckily we aren't in Texas!!! :D

and also......................... what is sold as beer in Texas would not meet the definition of beer anywhere else............so its kept in the bottle to disguise the fact that in reality its a by-product of all the cowboys' horses digestive systems !!!!! :D:D

What about drinking straight from the can? :o Now there's a wee spanner in the works for ya.

I'm saving that for my PhD. :D:D

include in your thesis the alacrity with which you can get outside it by shotgunning the can of beer.....

some references for your research

http://www.xmag.com/archives/12-01-jul04/feature1.html

during your practical experiments you should manage to do it easily in under 5 secs.

Hey! Texas is a 'multicultural' state!

There's even a few pubs where you can get a Guiness! :D

I'll allways drink it from the bottle in any beerbar in Thailand, that way you are sure that nothing else has been added to your drink, I have the bottle opened in front of me to be sure, but it's a matter of taste

Unless you put a straw in the bottle and bend the end over to release the air. It'll all go down in one then. Think the kids call it called depth charging.....!!!!!

is this going to be another wattage thread? At least it started out quite scientific until the Texans stepped in....

Persih the thought of drinking Beer Chang straight from the bottle, but a Corona totally different, except the piece of lime keeps getting stuck in my windpipe!

I use one of These I can get a 330ml bottle down in 2 seconds. :D

This contraption is basically a fancy straw bent end over (like Redrus post #16), with a plastic bottleneck extender – so why pay $5.99 when the straws are free (from the bar)? :o:D

– Yes some would consider me a cheap charlie. :D

never, I would do exactly the same

maybe I am cc too?

Saw a bloke drink a couple of bottles out of a gumboot ( those rubber boot things ) one time. He didnt seem to worry about any of his orifices. The flow rate seemed to be quite good though probably because of the large diameter of the receptacle and the accomodating nature of the rubber. Hope this is some help.

All the best.

depth charging

Take a mug of beer and a shot glass of whiskey. Drop the shot glass of booze into the beer. When the shot glass clinks the bottom of the mug chug it down nonstop.

Substitute the Whisky for a Drambuie and set it on fire before you drop it in !

I'll have to try it. :o

I went through a stage of only drinking out of a glass about a year ago.

I read ,on this forum I think, about the rats in the warehouses constantly pissing on the cases of beer and the associated diseases that could be passed. :D

Then about 6 months into my bottle abstinance, I watched a girl washing some glasses up in a bowl of water the colour and consistancy of diharrea (sp?) :o:D

Needless to say I'm back on the bottles as rat piss has got to better than Pattaya City water :D
