Road Conditions

Just come back from Poipet and thought I would pass on the following.

From about 70 kilometers to around 100 kilometres (from Poipet) on the way back to Rayong the road surface is breaking up very badly to the extent that, at times, you have to use the other side of the road. When it's raining the holes look like puddles but are actually 6 to 8 inches deep. I saw a few cars parked at the side of the with the drivers looking under their cars to find out what damage had been done.

I know the roads can be bad over here but if you are intending to go that way keep your eyes open for trucks buses cars suddenly changing lane at high speed to meet you head on.

it is very funny actually. It's been raining so hard and the roads are very rough everywhere. It is interesting the cars that just don't cut it. Just yesterday I drove past TWO Toyota Vios broken down on the side of the road (down the same stretch of road) as I comfortably cruised by in my CRUZE.

I laugh so hard I almost peed my pants. Good thing it's leather.

Thanks for the info. Incidentally, is Poipet any fun? What's interesting to do there?

I honestly don't know. I use the crossing for 90 day stamp sometimes. There is very large market but it's mostly clothes etc. Never spend time there, Bangkok - Poipet -Bangkok run and that's it I'm afraid. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Which road Nr are you talking about ?

33, 359 or 331 ?

Thanks :wai:

The sign I'm sure was AH 1 ( white on blue) I can't re-call the other numbers. On most maps if you check Aranyaprethet to Sa Keow you will see the one I'm talking about. You leave the border and it's almost a straight road back through Sa Keow to Bkk or you can turn off as I did and head to rayong Pattaya.

HighwayPolice can provide info on roads condition in Thai language. call 1193

I do it the old fashion way. I look out the window and slow the hell down.

good for you

a few months ago that would have taken you from Chumporn to Phunpin in Surat. As the road was closed in Phunpin under 2 meters of water, to continue to Phuket you would have needed to go back the 170km to Chumporn, and choose the other road to Phuket going through Ranong. 340 km wasted, as you only look out the window. or 4 days wait in Phunpin for road to open again.

I will continue calling HWP at 1153 for road reports when I want to travel a few thousand km

The Cruze is such a dynamic, comfortable and pleasurable bit of kit to drive, he would be most happy to go the long way round, I'm sure. wacko.gif

Of course the firm seats, if indeed a little to firm, of the Cruzer are particularly helpful with rough water crossings though! whistling.gif
