Spat over flood relief supplies

Pheu Thai MP Natthawut Saikua on Wednesday denied the allegation that the red shirts had control over the distribution of relief supplies for flood victims.

"It is not true that flood relief supplies are destined for flood areas dominated by the red shirts," he said.

Natthawut said the red shirts were among the early volunteers to help flood victims.

The red shirts made contributions on relief supplies which were made available to all victims and not just the reds, he said.

He also ruled out the suspicion that government MPs had taken advantage to claim credit by attaching their names and pictures on relief supplies even though the supplies were solicited from public contributions.

"If MPs did that, they should not have worked in the public service," he said.

He said MPs put up their names in order to notify relevant parties about the supplies allocated and awaited delivery to constituents.

He was reacting to remarks by Pheu Thai MP Chalong Riewraeng.

On Tuesday, Chalong voiced his frustration that as MP from Nonthaburi and a non-red, he had to wait a long time for the Flood Relief Operations Centre to approve 500 relief bags for his constituents.

He said the red shirts could access to about 5,000 relief bags per dispatch which would be delivered to a chosen location.

Democrat deputy spokesman Sakoltee Phattiyakul said the Pheu Thai Party made no credible rebuttal about favourtism dispensed for the red shirts.

Sakoltee said it was ironic that the red shirts had campaigned about double standards but failed to practice what they preach.

Why would you expect any relief in Bangkok from a man who not long ago was advocating that the city be burned? He had no sympathy for the people living in Bangkok then, I doubt anything has changed.

You think those MP's are really there to serve the public? Self service is more like it. Probably just upset because the signs were too small.

One thing this country needs is a few investigative reporters with the balls to go out, capture some of these things on film and then print it on the front page of the news papers. Of course after about one article they would probably come up missing and never be heard of again.

With all the talk about division within Thailand, reconciliation, favoritism, corruption, etc you would think someone somewhere would have thought to has distribution handled by people who at least display outwardly, their neutrality.

The Monks accept food, etc every day from the public. Could they not be pressed into service for distribution of aid packages? Some are shown filling sand bags, so not all of them are work brittle, it would seem.

The corruption/favoritism is so ingrained in the Thai political system, that nothing seems to be beneath them. We have seen at the the polls, to village aid money, farm product loss payment, etc. It is a cancerous growth that may be on track to destroy a nation.

I have to agree. It may be politically incorrect and quite unprovable - but I clearly see a cross between Mussolini red shirts and Khmer Rouge cadre, especially in Natthawut's eyes - Jatuporn is more obviously just a stupid buffalo.

Na. That would not stop him... He realised long ago that this was NOT good politicly so is staying out of it.. Same as the other likely lads Silpa Archer etc.

The 2nd string MP's like Yingluck and the science minister can make <deleted> of them selves.
