Twenty-two arrested for vote-rigging in Hong Kong

HONG KONG (BNO NEWS) -- Twenty-two people have been arrested in connection with alleged vote-rigging in Hong Kong's district council elections last month, the country's Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) said on Monday.

The 22 suspects were arrested in connection with alleged corrupt conduct and six of them have been charged so far. The ICAC said its investigation uncovered that the suspects provided false information about their residential addresses to election officers when registering to vote, Radio Television Hong Kong reported.

The vote-rigging took place in the King's Park constituency of Yau Tsim Mong district during the November 6 polls. The election was won by just two votes with the winning candidate beating his nearest rival with 1,045 votes to 1,043.

Chief executive election candidate Henry Tang said the government must tackle the problem of vote rigging within its current term. The Democratic Party said it has so far received nearly 800 reports of suspicious voter registration in the November 6 district elections.
