Death toll from flooding in Thailand reaches 740

2011-12-17 07:40:36 GMT+7 (ICT)

BANGKOK (BNO NEWS) -- The death toll from months of severe flooding across Thailand has reached at least 740, the country's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported on Friday.

About 3,652 villages in 80 districts of nine provinces in the upper part of the country are still suffering from the flooding, according to the Bangkok Post. As of Friday, at least 730 people have been killed in this region and three others remain missing.

In the southern region of the Asian country, flooding has affected about 2,057 villages in 65 districts, causing extensive damage to farm land and public facilities. The death toll in the southern provinces is at least 10, summing up to a total of 740 fatalities across the country.

Last week, the government of Thailand approved a Bt 20 billion ($648.5 million) budget for the country's post-flood reconstruction efforts. Among the restoration targets is the Don Mueang Airport as well as roads, educational institutions, government offices and religious and historical sites across the country.

Thailand has been hit by unusually heavy monsoon rains since July, causing at least 1.4 trillion baht ($44.6 billion) in damage. The country was also hit by severe flooding in the southern region in April in May, causing damage to its fishing industry, industrial sector, tourism, and business and trade, among other areas.

Late last month, the Thai government forecast that this year's flooding will likely slash the country's economy by around 1.2 percent.

More dying and all this government is caring about is amending the constituition so the scumbag can return.

The death toll count related to the flood seems to be following the accuracy/reliability of the highway death tolls, which are published as official. The number of electrocutions which are being blamed on the flood should more accurately be placed at the hands of dumb <deleted> who did not cut power to flooded areas. It is nice to have mother nature to blame as she is not part of the establishment.

Yes it´s so sad and bad.

if you cut the power to the flooded areas everyone who is not flooded and pumping out will be flooded.

the flooded people should cut their brakers or at least take rubber boots

You can selectively cut power, for even parts of streets,

it's not all or nothing

RIP or a raise in level for the reincarnation to all who've passed on.

Sadly The Red Shirt Government has more important things to be dealing with, like new passports for fugitives, changes to the constitution and an amnesty for The DL. :bah:

Ajarn Seri, the flood expert, mentioned that a woman called him, and said that if he had not answered his phone she was going to commit suicide.

The Govt. has officially said that there were tens of thousands of people who needed counseling about the flood disaster.

I'm wondering how many suicides in the 700+, I have a suspicion it's a significant number.
