Hello all,

I am in the process of applying for a family visitor visa for my thai wife and our Sdaughter together to the uk for 6 months.I am filling in the form at the moment and it says on the parents section mothers family name, would that be her maiden name or her married name for my wifes mother? Also my wifes mum doesnt know her dob only the year so can we just guess as i cant see them checking? My wife and daughter are in Thailand at the moment and i am in the uk and it says on the form date to travel to the uk and when will you return home.As i havent applied for it yet do i just put in say 16th feb 2012 or later than when we are expecting to go as we havent got any flights booked yet?My wife is a fulltime mother and i support her while she lives over in thai and i will support her while she is here in the uk but will have to transfer money into her account or will my bank statements be enough?Sorry about all the questions but i need to get things sorted and want it done properly.I hope someone can help who has applied for this visa before and will be greatly appreciated.cheers

Family name means surname, so the same as in her passport.

The embassy are used to the vagaries of Thai birth registration; put an approximate date.

The visa will be dated from the date you put here or the date it is issued, whichever is the later; it cannot be used before this date. Put the date she wishes to travel.

If you are paying for the visit, then it is you who supplies the financial evidence.

You may find this topic helpful.

Remember that the ECO will wonder why you live in the UK and your wife and step-daughter live in Thailand, and be concerned that they will wish to remain in the UK with you and so not leave at he end of their visit. You need to explain this in your sponsor's letter.

Thanks for the reply 7by7,i would also like to know the time it takes for the visa to be issued approximately,im going over for a month ,do you think the visa will be issued in that time?My daughter with my thai wife has a british passport but we still have to get her a thai passport as i need to sign the form ove rthere,so will my daughter exit thai on her thai passport and enter uk on her british passport?

Thanks in advance

Visa processing takes as long as it takes, I'm afraid. At busy times visit visas can take 6 weeks or even more. At quiet times a matter of a few working days.

This is normally a quiet time; but it usually starts to get busy in Feb/March.

Yes, your daughter leaves and enters Thailand showing her Thai passport and leaves and enters the UK showing her British one.

She should show both to the airline when checking in so they will know why she doesn't have a visa and so will have no concerns about carrying her..
