GUERRERO, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- More than 700 people, including children, suffered food poisoning earlier this week after attending a campaign rally for a local politician in southern Mexico, health officials said on Friday.

Health authorities confirmed that at least 709 people fell ill after eating tacos at a rally held by the Institutional Revolutionary Party in the town of Chilapa de Alvarez in Guerrero state. Officials said adults and children suffered from severe diarrhea, fever and vomit.

The victims were treated at both public and private hospitals, according to the El Universal newspaper. However, as large numbers of people went to seek emergency treatment, local authorities were forced to open an auditorium to treat them.

Food and drink samples have been sent to laboratories to identify what caused the food poisoning. People said they had consumed rice, egg tacos, and ham sandwiches which were handed out at the rally in support of former mayor Sergio Dolores, who is running for Congress.

Health officials have warned people of the 15 communities surrounding Chilapa to exercise extreme caution when preparing their food and drinks as the source remains unclear.

Mexico will hold a general election on July 1. Citizens are often promised gifts and food for attending political events and show support for candidates.
