MYKOLAIV, UKRAINE (BNO NEWS) -- Seven children were killed on early Monday morning when a fire broke out at a residential home in southern Ukraine, local authorities said. Their mother was seriously injured.

The fire broke out at around 6:15 a.m. local time at a residential house in the village of Kinetspil, which is located in the district of Pervomaisk in the country's Mykolaiv region. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Emergencies Ministry said seven children, between the ages of 2 and 14, died from smoke inhalation. Their mother, who suffered severe burns, was rushed to a local hospital in a critical condition.
