Three airlines to raise fuel surcharges in Hong Kong

HONG KONG (BNO NEWS) -- The Civil Aviation Department of Hong Kong (CAD) on Tuesday allowed three airlines to increase their passenger fuel surcharges by up to seven percent in March, the government said. The surcharges are reviewed regularly.

The new maximum levels of fuel surcharges in Hong Kong will take effect on March 1 for passengers of All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways and Singapore Airlines. They will be 230 Hong Kong dollars (29.65 U.S. dollars) for short-haul flights and 1,039 Hong Kong dollars (133.97 U.S. dollars) for long-haul flights, representing increases of seven percent and five percent respectively.

"Passenger fuel surcharges seek to allow airlines to partially recover the increase in operational costs due to fluctuations in aviation fuel prices," the Civil Aviation Department of Hong Kong said in a statement. "As the aeronautical authority in Hong Kong, the CAD considers and approves fuel surcharge applications from the airlines in accordance with bilateral Air Services Agreements."

Passenger fuel surcharges in Hong Kong are reviewed regularly by the government and depend on aviation fuel prices. The Civil Aviation Department of Hong Kong also allowed the three airlines to raise fuel surcharges in December 2011, but in January the department decided to lower them again.
