Strong earthquake shakes southern Taiwan - seismologists

TAIPEI CITY, Taiwan (BNO NEWS) -- A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan on late Sunday morning, seismologists said. It was not immediately clear if there were damages or casualties.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake at 10:35 a.m. local time (02:35 GMT) was centered in Pingtung County, according to the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan (CWB). Moderate to strong shaking was felt in Taitung County, Pingtung County and Tainan City, the agency said.

It was not immediately clear if there were damages or casualties. No tsunami alert was issued.
