We have a jar of Marmite XO in our fridge....ooh baby! http://bit.ly/GWsy0E

Before anybody asks it was a "special" import from Blighty. Before you Vegemite fans jump up on your VM bandwagon drop the hate for a second or two and see if you can get some of this for yourselves....special...seriously special!

I am with you - it is like champagne to beer both great but the XO one is really special.

I just use the vaseline, I smear it under the hood to keep the snakes from sleeping on top of the warm engine, works like a charm of course.

About the smell; I have always wondered if pigsheit had the same qualities as marmite, would one eat that too?

If in doubt, then Villa can usually be relied on to stock this inferior form of yeast extract, usually a couple of shelves below the Vegemite.

If they are out, then you can always mix a bit if Vegemite with sugar to get a marmite like taste.

Marmite which you obviously don't know, was the first Yeast extract, founded in 1914 as a food supplement for the troops of the 1914--1918 war, whilst Vegemite only copied Marmite, due to the success of Marmite, which Vegemite was not founded until 1922, read the Jars.

Hello fellow Marmite lover. Here in Chiang Mai we can find it in most (but not all) branches of Tops. We can also find it in Rimping which is another western style supermarket but I am not sure if you have them there? Also, can be found in smaller health food style shops.

When I investigated it, I worked out that to get 2000 grams of Marmite sent here (four of the biggest size jars) would only cost 100 BAHT more than buying it from the shops (the problem being that the shops don't always have it!) Luckily I have not had to resort to such measures yet. I believe that they have a distributor in Malaysia which is not too far (I found it easily and cheap when I was there.)

When I am in England I am going in search in one of those big buckets that you can get of it, I am not sure if they sell them in England or not, but where else could sell such a big size of it. I am thinking of trying Makro. You might want to try to do the same daftpunker, and one of them should hopefully last you out a year or two! But hide it in your suitcase as I'm not sure it's allowed.

Cheers Marmite on toast all round. smile.png

As I look at a just emptied jar and as another marmite lover you could when in the UK ring 08000323656 (Marmite loveline) and get any info from them. I didn't know they produced them in buckets.

Oh thanks for that! I'll call them in England this summer. Yeah a friend over here had a bucket of it. i didn't know where she'd got it from. But where else could they sell it in buckets other than UK! I'll try the number. Cheers!

Yes. I think people are getting confused because there is another brand of Marmite, by a company called Sanitarium or something, an Australian make. To me it tastes just like Vegemite, but maybe it's a bit sweeter. However it is not to be confused with the English Marmite. The Aussie one seems to be more common here as I am often offered it when in search of the real stuff.

Right. Okay.

Thanks for that fascinating timeline.

There's no sugar in Marmite you misguided fool. I tried Vegemite once, tasted similar to shrimp paste to me - awful. Perhaps that's why you prefer it?

You have been "muff diving" again, have'nt you ! giggle.giflicklips.gif
