MONTERREY, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- A group of unidentified gunmen attacked two taxi service stations in northern Mexico on Tuesday afternoon, killing at least eight taxi drivers and injuring two others, local authorities said on Wednesday.

Police said the shooting spree began at around 2:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday when gunmen opened fire at a taxi service station in the Cuenca Verde neighborhood of the municipality of Guadalupe, located in the state of Nuevo Leon, just 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) east of the state capital of Monterrey.

Police said five taxi drivers were killed at the scene while a sixth taxi driver was critically wounded and later rushed to a local hospital.

After the first attack, the gunmen continued their way on Eloy Cavazos Avenue until reaching the road junction with San Roque, some 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the site of the first attack. There, the attackers again opened fire at a taxi service station, killing three taxi drivers and injuring a child.

The motive behind the killings was not immediately clear, and the suspects remain at large.
