Democracy group ends year with ‘big bite’

Published on December 25, 2005

To mark the end of the year, the Campaign for Popular Democracy has again coined nicknames for the prime minister and key political institutions to encapsulate politics in 2005.

For the Thaksin administra-tion, it is lampooned as “Big Bite”, reflecting the multiply-ing corruption scandals. Prime Minister Thaksin is given the nickname “Shrinking Angular”, a very Thai reference to his square face as a symbol for running out of cunning political moves as more and more people see through him.

The House of Representatives is dubbed the “Chamber of Employers” for succumbing to big business instead of advancing the public interest. The Senate is known as “Chamber of Lackadaisical” for failing to live up to public expectations.

The infamous quote for the year is: “Provinces casting the least votes for us will be at the bottom of our attention,” delivered by Thaksin on October 31 in Nakhon Sawan.
