Transport Ministry confident in state measures to prevent floods

BANGKOK, 13 May 2012 (NNT) – The Transport Ministry is confident that the government’s measures to handle future floods will be effective, particularly with the construction of new dykes along the western bank of Chao Phraya River.

Deputy Transport Minister Chatchart Sithipan said that the government has made progress on the post-flood road repairs and the construction of a new road along the western bank of the Chao Phraya River, which will be used as a floodway and to ease traffic flow in the future.

Mr. Chatchart’s update was made after his inspection trip to Nakhon Sawan and Samut Sakhon provinces to check on the irrigation system on the Chao Phraya’s western bank, which is a part of the Transport Ministry’s flood prevention project.

He stated that all projects will soon be executed, with the first phase expected to complete before the rainy season arrives.

The Deputy Transport Minister added that all projects are long-term ones and need to be continuously executed, particularly the dyke construction, which is aimed at helping upstream floodwater flow more naturally towards the sea.

Mr. Chatchart is confident that all state-initiated projects will be effective in handling this year’s flood, as all related plans will be efficiently integrated to achieve the best results.

The natural flow for flood waters is to use flood plains. The dyke construction is STOPPING the natural flow.

Good point! He doesn't understand how it works, but he is "confident of the measures."

The lights are on but as usual, nobody is home...coffee1.gif

Well of course they are in control of floods. The whole place is in drought.

Next we'll have the MoFCD.... Ministry of Fixing Cracked Dams.

Cracked, or cacked even, as they were never supposed to be empty from the foundations up! clap2.gif

The Japanse have not even finished the project ( air photo survey) of deteriming what/where the catchment areas nor the monkey cheek dams will be, upstream. (see another government motor mouths take on things) May 2013 projected finish.

Tis whole group do not seem to have the slightest idea of how the small items make up the whole project. Time and again we hear Official orders to solve problems, but they seem lost, as how to proceed in any orderly manner. The sad part is a substantial part of the population seem to believe anything they hear. being uttered by these clowns.

They're using roads to act as floodways and dykes.

Yes. Building the roads up so that they block the water.

I not see so many Dykes here in Thailand... I am Dutch so maybe i was used to a lot of Dykes...

By the way do you know the Dutch story about:

The boy who puts a finger in the Dyke? In English this must be much more amusing.

Anyway excuse my Dutch

I wonder how many of the Thai population are actually aware that they are in a "water catchment area" as referred to in a thread a few months ago? You can bet your cotton socks very few! No wonder then that they may take matters into their own hands and open / damage floodgates? Here I am not talking about what colour shirt you happen to wear, just simple information, which the present administration is unable to disseminate in any meaningful way.

Not block! Flow more naturaly they say! hahahahahahahaha clap2.gif

Dykes are actually a good solution (in combination with water reservoirs), as it seems to work well in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The problem is that the flow of the river is a couple of hundred kilometers in length and to build quality dykes that are strong enough to facilitate the flow of massive amounts of water would need a mega investment.

Forget the 300 billion, think more in trillions of Bahts including maintenance! If the government would start yesterday, they might pull it off by the year 2025!

and too bad if your house is upstream of the dyke and not downstream! You can see roads being destroyed by irate villages to let the water flow where it is supposed to flow!

So is the government building this road along the river to keep it on the western side or the eastern side of the river? I'm west of Pak kret and we got hit hard, while those on the eastern side of the river were high and dry...

It's too late for that because Bangkok is built on the flood plain? What do you suggest, that they leave Bangkok flood? Lucky you're not in charge.

Well what you say is true.

Also Bangkok is sinking.

They might want to reconsider the Dutch offer of help.

Absolutely. Is it that you don't think it would work or that you don't think they would do it?

Depends on how much the Dutch can pay.....if no back-kick what would be the point of the help for a politician?

Is there any maps showing where the new dykes are placed? The river can only hold so much volume, so if you raise the banks on one side, you probably raise the height of the river. Then the flood will move to the side with the lowest bank level, or if equal, possibly flood both side.

Do you? One thing that I'll put the housekeeping money on is that whatever the Government (I use the term loosely) says will happen, won't.
