Iranian Tourist reports theft from South Pattaya hotel room safe

PATTAYA:--An Iranian Tourist reported the theft of money from his room safe on Wednesday afternoon and the suspected thief is thought to have checked out of a room directly above the victims.

Mr. Ali aged 40 who resides at the Amstellux Apartments on the Pratamnuk Road in South Pattaya met Police who came to investigate the theft of 7,000 US Dollars and the equivalent of 100,000 Baht’s worth of Iranian Currency from the room safe.

Mr. Ali explained how he left the room at 11pm on Tuesday Night and returned at 4am on Wednesday. He went straight to sleep, not realising his safe had been forced open and the contents had been stolen, when he was out. When he awoke on Wednesday afternoon, he noticed the safe was open.

I am not saying this was the case here but some of these instances are not as they seem and many try insurance scams to fund there trips here. The incidence of real crimes like this is, however, high and if it was real this time then you have to feel for him.

I'm sure the BIB will work out whether its a genuine robbery or an insurance scam dry.png .

Maybe I'm a cheapskate, but I've never gone on my hol's carrying 10,000 USD in cash whistling.gif

Gee...I wish I HAD $US 10,000,that 's about 300,000 Baht innit ?

Could do a lot with that !!!

Geez, take your cash with you and you get pickpocketed by trannies, leave it in the hotel safe and it gets stolen. What can a tourist do to keep cash safe in Pattaya?

I would tend to agree...there are just too many of these stories of residents/tourists keeping silly amounts of cash in their homes/rooms and then reporting it stolen to be taken seriously. And if they are true, well then they're just stupid, when there are perfectly safe and inexpensive alternative, e.g., ATM cards and travelers checks.

The guy is from Iran. Recent worldwide sanctions on Iranian banks must have an impact on Iranians using the normal banking channels to access money abroad, including the issuance of t/chqs.

So no big surprise on him carrying cash.

Does anyone know of travel insurance that actually covers more than a minimal amount of cash? I dont.
