CARACAS, VENEZUELA (BNO NEWS) -- A military helicopter crashed in northwestern Venezuela on Friday morning, killing four service members and injuring the sole survivor, officials said on Saturday. The cause was not immediately known.

The accident occurred at around 11:15 a.m. local time on Friday when the Russian-made MI-17 helicopter crashed at an aviation school in San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy state. It was carrying out an instruction flight in the San Felipe area to certify a pilot.

Venezuelan Defense Minister Henry Rangel Silva said the helicopter was flying at an altitude of approximately 10 meters (11 yards) when it lost control and slammed into the ground, killing four of the five people on board. The sole survivor was transported to a hospital in San Felipe, where he was said to be in a stable condition.

The country's defense ministry identified the victims as pilot Colonel Oscar Martinez, the pilot of the aircraft, First Lieutenant Ramses Bolivas and flight assistants First Sergeant Daniel Ribas and Second Sergeant Yixon Tochon. The survivor was identified as Second Corporal Alberto Castillo.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

On March 29, seven crew members were killed when a Super Puma 2216 aircraft belonging to the Venezuelan Air Force went down in a field near Yagual, located in the country's state of Apure near the border with Colombia, approximately 600 kilometers (372 miles) southwest of Caracas.
