Chiang Mai Governor M.L. Panadda Diskul called on people to stay within the law and not gamble on the Euro 2012 Championships being held from June 8 to July 2. He urged people to avoid illegal gambling on football as often gambling turns into an obsession that leads to crime and poverty.

He added that the police will be cracking down on illegal gambling during this period and will monitor for sports betting venues. Any government officials found to have been involved will face disciplinary measures. Those breaking the law will be subject to a punishment of one year in jail or a fine not exceeding 1,000 Baht or both.

Previous football matches, including the World Cup, have seen a spike in gambling around the country with many people losing everything they own gambling on matches and often turning to crime to pay off their gambling debts.
