Tourist destination beefs up security

CHIANG MAI, 26 June 2012:

Chiang Mai governor, Panadda Disakul, has called for safety measures to be beefed up across the province, following the murder of an Australian female travel agent in Phuket last week.

The governor said: “Police, provincial and local authorities have been instructed to protect tourists and build up their confidence in their holiday experience in Chiang Mai.

“Police patrol units have been increased particularly at night and during weekends when there are more tourists. More than 200 volunteers have been assigned to keep a watchful eye and report anything suspicious to police officers,” he added.

Recognising the Phuket slaying had damaged Thailand’s image , he said it would have an impact long-term on tourism across the country.

“Tourist safety now is a hot issue forcing us to tighten security measures,” he said.
