Advice On Mattress Toppers

JustCurious

Recommended Posts

Having recently moved in Chiang Mai, found myself on hard box springs. Bought from Home Pro what was reputed to be a 100% latex made in Thailand 4-inch mattress. When it was delivered I found it to be a 3-inch thick topper and of course complained. The general manager of the store jumped in and found that the the company salesman was off that day and the wrong one had been special ordered and delivered. It was in fact a "topper" not a mattress and the mfgr, Lady Americana, doesn't make a 4" version. She checked other companies and found Lotus does make a 4" latex Topper (& I learned that a topper is different from a mattress!).

As it evolved I tried it out for two nights and found it comfortable since I prefer a firm mattress, so I kept the topper and use it without a mattress. To sum up, guess it all depends on what one prefers. I might add I had been on a waterbed for 35 years and found it to be most comfortable providing it was sufficiently filled to be firm -- never had a problem with waking at night to turn over due to a sore shoulder or hip and hopefully this topper will have the same results.

I bought one from Mam a while ago and have been very happy with it. I even used the topper as a mattress for a year or so and it was comfortable by itself.

+1

A 15 cm pad on any old mattress is very comfortable. Lots of bahts, but if you are going to be in LOS for a long time.....

Like MilesCh, I would still prefer my waterbed of 35 years.

^ I just purchased a King-size 100% latex mattress on sale at I.S. Curtain & Decor. They have toppers there too.

I missed the Central Airport sale last week of OMAZZ (USA and when not on sale, very expensive) and other latex mattresses; and thus was very pleased to see the IS collection on sale too. What struck me about these latex mattresses was their outer coverings, nice material with great strength. So many available of the internet and around town seem to be covered in flimsy "gauze-like" sheeting.

IS is an Indian-Thai establishment that used to be located in the "Indian-Thai curtain/ decor shop house collective" beside Worarot market.

'I.S', a large 2-story complex, is now located at the back of Big C Extra (formerly Carrefore) on the right side of the road leading directly from the back gate to BigC. This area has a lot of bistro-like shops and restaurants, and often is packed by street markets. At night it's a party-zone, or was.

'IS' was recommended to me by new 'The Grand Village' housing development when I inquired as to where they had purchased their amazing vinyl wall coverings.

Grand Village is located just past Siriporn Garden 9 on the left as you head towards Doi Saket/ ChiangRai.

Absolutely stunningly beautiful homes from ~3 to 5.35 Million Baht - all with Q-con(aerated concrete) walls, the high grade aluminum windows/door frames, solariums, etc.. I liked their show homes, but not their location at the entrance to the estate (best to avoid lots adjacent to any entrance what with noise of owners' vehicles coming and going 7/24). Been to many many new developments and this one stands out as affordable quality, with current engineering/design trends. But I digress.

Tired of repainting walls over the years, and a past rental having one main wall with a vinyl covering requiring little maintenance; we wished to go for vinyl coverings for most, if not, all walls on our new home.

The selection shown to us by Arun, son of the I.S. owner, were plentiful with even a recently arrived vinyl wall covering catalog for kids' rooms: a Disney selection. The cost per 5 meter roll of vinyl averages B800, including labor/installation/advice at home.(So my son states - I believe this to be correct). They have quality furniture, a lighting section and other household amenities.

Their 2nd floor caters to children from infants to ~12 years; bedding, clothing, accessories, plus the 'Hi-So, must-have" powdered milk that one sees under lock and key each with their anti-theft toggle, at supermarkets. My 5-year old grand daughter will be their next customer, as she has to yet to OK the vinyl covering for her room.

So, if you are a 'latex mattress wannabe', as I was, but have been put off by normally high prices and seemingly dodgy quality, simply await the sales at Airport Plaza, at I.S., or elsewhere. Don't be bashful, ask the salesperson for a discount or when their next sale is.

For chic, inexpensive, quality vinyl wall coverings, and furniture, 'I.S.' is a winner in our book. We left a deposit for a magnificent rosewood office desk and a bedroom set too.

Disclosure: I have no business relationship with either Central or I.S.

Would latex on the walls lead to mold?

Re your "Farung would rather be told the truth than kept in the dark" - I agree so where exactly can they actually view and test your (I mean your wife's) products here in Chiangmai. Hmmm.

Let's allow the community to make up their own minds.

I stand by my comments.

It seems that memory foam is hot to sleep on which would be a real negative here.

We used a Tempur mattress topper for six years in Chiang Mai... Didn't find it hot at all.

If you do a search for "latex vs memory foam" then you will see the difference. Memory foam is made from petrochemicals and will loose its ability to "expand back" after a few years, amongst many other things.

http://faqmattress.c...atex-memory.htm

Thanks for the link, but I really do find a lot of what I just read to be more 'advertisement' than fact...

Six years with it in Chiang Mai, another three years here. Nine years with Tempur's mattress topper and two Tempur pillows. So far, so good. How many years before it stops expanding back? For the past three years we've been using the Tempur memory foam topper right on the floor... No mattress under it. More than comfortable enough for us, and supportive enough for my bad back. It's certainly something we plan to bring back to Chiang Mai in a few months.

I'd like to try the latex toppers to see how different it feels. Eventually any mattress will wear out. Ours has given nine years of good service so far, doesn't seem to be losing anything, but who knows? I'd really like to compare to two.

Thats great that you have had a good experience with your Tempur....given the high cost, one would hope it would last many years.

You and me both... But even at nine year's usage, I think I've already gotten my money's worth from it..... I figure it's cost me about 2 cents a night. Frankly... I can afford 2 cents a night.

EDIT: I just checked a few different web sites... The prices between Tempur and Natural Latex don't seem to be so far apart. What gives? On some sites, the Latex was more expensive!

Natural latex is soft and spongy, but not sticky like I find memory foam to be.

Sticky? Mine has what seems to be like a cotton terrycloth cover on the mattress topper, and a thinner terry cover on the pillows. Nothing sticky. Were you feeling the actual foam itself? I could imagine that could be. I'd think that with today's market that there are several different producers of Memory Foam, and most likely several different qualities too.

But for us it was more a choice of a natural product that is sustainable that sold us. Memory foam is made entirely from petro-chemicals, something I personally would not want my face squished into every night.

Yes... I can see that natural products 'could be' desirable. Tree sap 'should be' better than oil.

Of course, the sap of the English Yew tree is one of the most powerful poisons found growing!

Poison ivy is a natural product, the sap of Oleander, the sap of Diffenbachia, natural jelly fish tentacles, natural Foxglove, and belladona, ...All highly poisonous! The list of 'natural products goes on. bah.gif

Probably natural latex is safe. On the other hand (no pun intended) most physicians have switched to nitrile gloves because of sensitivity to latex. And it's become difficult today to even find latex gloves in general markets. That begs some questions...

If I gave up smoking, drinking, and breathing polluted air, and ate only organically grown foods, I'd probably head directly towards 'natural products' for sleeping too. However, my body isn't that holy yet. These days I go for comfort. I know that the Tempur is comfortable. I plan to try the Latex and see for myself if that is more or less so. If it is, I'd switch to Latex in a minute. At my age I want all the comfort I can get, and cost be damned. I'll keep an open mind. smile.png

I've now spent several hours reading various sites about natural latex mattresses, comparing blended natural latex, pure natural latex, etc., and comparing prices with different memory foam sellers.

Frankly, I'm getting confused...

It seems that the sellers of pure natural latex only warranty their mattresses for 10 years.

Tempur memory foam mattresses are warranteed for 20 years.

I never realized that. (No wonder my mattress and pillows still feel the same as when I bought them!)

In order to find a latex mattress with a 20 year warranty one needs to buy a blended latex, and most of the blended latex ones aren't completely natural. Still more latex than other ingredients, but not really pure. Prices are incredibly hard to compare as there are densities to deal with, thicknesses to deal with, and blends to deal with. Of course, this is true with memory foam mattresses too.

I think that until I can actually lay down on a latex mattress and a memory foam mattress in the same day, I'm not going to be in any position to know which is better... for me.

Tesco Lotus Express Chiang Mai Thailand.

We just found a good little shop out the front of Tescos. We just needed a cheap mattress topper as me might not stay long.

2,800 baht delivered for a 2inch king size topper. Made our rock hard rented apartment mattress really comfortable.

And Home pro has "toppers" for 999B!! Great for the cat or dog to sleep on!

I don't think those are intended for cats and dogs. Home Pro and Global seems to have some sort of quality control in place, and do not peddle as much junk as some other similar stores. E.g. I bought a car cover at Big C recently, put it on the car, and when I returned after three weeks, the cover had torn at several spots on the side facing the sun. When I took the cover off, it tore further on the sunny side and I had to throw the cover away.

Put me off Big C. If Hoe Pro has a topper for 999B, I'd assume it was, while not comparable to a tempura or similar, decent value for money.

Wow Vibe... what a statement. Just because something isn't latex and not sold by you and your wife doesn't mean it's only fit for animals.

Not everyone wants to spend a lot of money to fix what is in most cases a short term problem.

We got a comfortable solution for less than $3k baht that will suit us for our stay. I'd recommend people on this forum shop around.

"My believe is that in this world, you get what you pay for."

People who believe that area a vendor's wet dream. For others, there are consumer reports, online reviews, personal references.

Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't.

If you found something that you are happy with for under 3K, then thats great. But I myself found the 999B toppers at home pro to be hard and of poor quality, and was unable to tell what they are made out of. Thats my opinion about them, not because my wife sells "expensive" toppers, but because I personally like quality products.

You can be can have your opinion that a 3K topper is good enough, and I can have an opinion that a 999B topper is only fit for animals. My believe is that in this world, you get what you pay for. If something is very cheap, there is a reason for it. Either the quality of the parts used is poor, or manufacture was poor…or both! Its for this reason that I do not buy copy bags anymore, cause they just did not last. I have found that if one is willing to spend a bit more on a product, that it will typically last longer as well as perform better. Thats my opinion and direct experience.

I couldn't agree more VIBE, and IMHO this is never more true than when making purchases in Thailand.

There is no denying that you can purchase most items in Thailand at a laughable price compared to North America but unfortunately the quality is just as laughable. This is not to say that you can't buy quality items in Thailand but you must be prepared to at least spend a few baht.

Quality and expensive go hand in hand but when it comes to something I'm going to spend half my life on I'm not willing to cut corners.

My advice to the OP… go for a good quality topper, It may be a little more than you wanted to spend but it's a purchase you won't lose any sleep over in the coming years.

Well I dont agree, so each to their own. I bought at Peenang from a wide selection of toppers and paid 2500 for queensize . They delivered out of town same day free of charge and we both sleep perfectly on it. Of course, its firm (not hard) and suits us just fine.
