rubl
Come on folks - you choose to live here and know the rules on alcohol sales at Buddhist feasts and election days. You have at least three choices - don't drink, buy in advance or find a local shop whee the owner is prepare to risk being fined (I say at least three as some smart **se is sure to mention another one!) Why do we have this winging every time the law is imposed? TIT If you can't stand the heat..................... Because as a law it largely achieves nothing in terms if stopping anyone drinking. In true Thai legal and societal fashion, a show, a sham of a law in terms of achieving anything. All show over substance, it is a sop. It's illegal to sell to underage drinkers every day of the year and it happens everywhere. Brilliant hypocrisy. I understand there are a few reasons for the two day ban: - proper respect for religious and cultural (historical) events - 'support the needy' (aka your local police force) - government needs more income (long distance behind point 1. and 2. though)
sysardman
Many places still serving in BKK tomorrow, just got to know where to look :-) Care to share the secret? After all, one of the premises of the forum is to help each other and offer advice. Your local mom and pop shop is not an acceptable answer. Doesn't this fall under helping others break the law???? and therefore taboo

Stopping selling alcohol out of respect is like stopping selling condoms if they also wanted to ban sex tomorrow. They are going to do it anyway. Maybe they should declare tomorrow national no corruption day? Now that would be worthwhile. Edited August 1, 2012 by Thai at Heart

sysardman
What we fail to remember is that some of us actually work from Monday to Friday teaching and when a nice Holiday comes up I would like to chill out on the beach and have a nice cool beer or two and if going with friends that could turn out to be a piss up! and that is very much welcoming after months of teaching these trying students at times So as I'm not a religious or even a bloody Buddhist why should I have to stay clear or can't buy beer or whisky when these holidays are on? And before anyone says well go home then, let me tell you I have family/house/friends here in Thailand, go and do one!!!! 1. Maybe your students are 'trying' because you're not trying - I can't say I'm impressed by the standard of English spoken by the Thais that I've met. 2. As one poster pointed out it is Thailand and therefore the LAW. 3. I fail to see thepoint of that argument - so big deal you have family/friends etc here woweee!!!! must mean you get a free pass to break Thai law AND YOUR POINT IS......WORZEL GUMMIDGE? SIX YEARS TEACHING THAT SAYS SOMETHING IN ITSELF YES? LIKE I SAID GO AND DO ONE END OF. Also note the fine teaching example, advanced name calling and playground bullying - nah, nah, nah, naahh, nah my dad's bigger than your dad . Does it really take six years to teach them 'do you want fries with that?' or 'regular or gasohol? 91 or 95'. jeffcool
It is very unfortunate, but my mooban is on a permanent shakedown from the pricks in black. We all have to pay 300 baht a month for protection. I have no idea why, but it's not collected in a nice fashion. If I have ever read something on here that is deserving of a thread all of its own, it is what you have said here. Genuinely, please share, sounds juicy. Indeed... Very juicy.... Maybe you should call the number provided??? might be a link to their mobile phones.... Not happening like that in my mooban, please do share. whistleblower
Go to the shop NOW (today, before midnight), stock up on all the booze and beer you need to survive those 2 short days - problem solved. Why do we have pages and pages of disgruntled posts EACH AND EVERY TIME such a holiday comes around? This NOT the first time alcohol sales are banned in Thailand, you know... GET OVER IT! And if you're getting out of town: you'll ALWAYS find a shop willing to sell you a few bottles, and regardless of the ban. Another solution is the visiting alcoholics that can't go a day or two with out their fix in respect for a religious holiday can just go home to their own country. Respect their religion and holidays or leave. Simple solution! Big fat yawn to another thai hugger! I drink a couple of beers every day and no i dont go to the bars. I have a well stocked fridge at home. I think the general argument that people are trying to make is that this alcohol ban is just lip service. The minister that has enforced it probably has a couple of mia nois, an income from corruption and is unusually wealthy for his pay grade and position. So why try to show he is being moralistic? GeorgeO
Are you worried to be dry for 2 days ? Lol Yes, actually I am. What does it matter to you? After 4 months with a broken leg and just being given clearance to walk without assistance and 5 days off from work, I'd like to enjoy my time off. This is a cause for celebration. Let's add to that ... My girlfriend has just gotten her visa approval to visit the US in October to meet my family. Also, one of my best friends is moving to Bangkok. Yeah, it does kind of bother me, as I am not Buddhist. I may have had some symphony for you wanting to have a drink as you have broken your leg & have had good news about your girl friends visa, but to say...”I am not Buddhist” is very disrespectful!!!! What’s your problem? You have beer now so stay home & drink!! ? If a Buddhist visits or lives in a country that celebrates Christmas day & that country you cannot go to a shop to buy beer what should they do & say?? How is a statement such as "I am not Buddhist" in any way disrespectful? It's simply a statement of fact!

SunsetT
I get in to Bangers tomorrow night - will the duty free grog be off sale as well you think? I doubt it....last time I flew out of Swampy, It was April 9 or 10th when there was a similar ban, I was able to enjoy my last 'Archa' bought from the 7/11 on the lowest Train Link Level while killing time before my flight.....By the way this is the level to go and relax and eat and drink in peace and quiet if you want to escape the harsh acoustics of the other floors which I find unbearable for long. davehowden
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but it is a violation of Buddhist practice to drink any day. It's one of the five vows for lay Buddhists, to abstain from alcohol. I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but it is a violation of Buddhist practice to drink any day. presscamera
I am in Bangkok on holidays and note with amusement the general alcohol sales restriction sign which says no alcohol before 11 - and 2 - 5 pm . 5 pm to midnight is ok. But the sign also says that if you buy more than 10 liters the rules don't apply and you can buy any time. My thoughts went to the bottle stores in the north west of Australia where the locals fill up 4 wheel drive toyotas with grog

brianP
The Thai's should learn from the land of opportunists er. (opportunity). Advertise and promote liquor a couple days before the ban. Have a sale and contest to bring awareness of the upcoming drought. Be creative to package farangs favorite mixed drinks and snacks. Make a wrapped basket of alcohol and grub with a Foreigners flag to show you care about the neglected dry farangs' plight. Tack posters and hand out fliers. Please make the holidays better Thai vendor friends.
