THAI-MYANMAR TIES

Still no visits allowed for 92 Thai detainees

The Nation

RANONG: -- All 92 Thais arrested in Myanmar early last month are still being deprived of visits from their relatives.

"I want to visit my relations," Tham Yimwan said yesterday, lamenting that six of his relatives had not been allowed visitation rights for more than a month since their arrest on July 4.

They are among 92 Thais sentenced to three and a half years in jail for illegally entering Myanmar.

"I hope the relevant authorities here will help arrange the visits," he said.

Colonel Pornsak Poonsawas, who heads the Thailand-Myanmar Township Border Committee on the Ranong-Koh Song side of the border, yesterday said his unit had been working closely with Myanmar officials on the matter.

"We believe we should get good news soon. Once we get it, we will join their relatives in visiting them," he said.

Senate set to vote on a new president next week

Tawee Prachuaplarp, middle, the Criminal Court judge in charge of a bail review for red-shirt leaders involved in the terrorism case, meets with court officers, police and staff from the Department of Corrections to discuss security preparations

BANGKOK: -- Members of the Senate will vote for a new president next Tuesday, but only nominees with backing from at least 10 senators will be allowed to run for the post.

Nikhom Vairatpanich, vice-president of the Senate, said senators could not nominate themselves and that each candidate would be given 10 minutes to speak about their vision for the Senate before votes are cast. Additional rounds of voting would be held should two or more candidates win the same number of votes.

So far, five contenders have emerged with appointed Senator Pichaet Sunthornpipit leading the pack.

Meanwhile, Senator Kamnoon Sitthisamarn has called on Nikhom to quit from his post as vice president now if he wishes to run for the top post so his replacement can be elected on the same day. Kamnoon said he believed this would set a good standard.

However, the Senate appears to be divided over this issue and Nikhom has said that he is not sure if he would be nominated for the presidency. He said he would make a decision on the day of the ballot and called on fellow senators not to pressure him.

"Can you give me the right [to consider]? Give me a chance and do not pressure me ... I have devoted myself to the House. I am a sportsman and will not make demands, but please don't pressure me," Nikhom said.

Nine soldiers wounded in Pattani bombing

image_20120807121020FF7DA2C1-0D12-B1CC-CF693C00BDD377AF.jpg

PATTANI, Aug 7 – Nine soldiers were wounded Tuesday morning in the latest bombing in the southern province of Pattani.

A team of soldiers were on a routine patrol to provide security for teachers going to school in Yarang district when a roadside bomb exploded, causing their vehicle to lose control and plunge into a roadside field.

Nine soldiers were wounded. Most also suffered chest tightness and ringing in their ears. Detonated by remote-control, the bomb was built into a fire extinguisher and weighed an estimated15 kg.

In the adjacent province of Yala, the Islamic Bank, Raman branch is closed today after yesterday’s bombing incident.

Manager Ahmadtayadin Mustafah said that the bank’s front glass wall was destroyed, but the computer system remains intact.

Surveillance cameras captured images of one attacker, a man about 170 cm tall, wearing a helmet. He parked a motorcycle in front of the bank at about 4 pm.

Shortly afterward, a vehicle carrying an army patrol stopped nearby and two soldiers came to the ATM machine. The bomb exploded as the soldiers were about to leave, injuring six.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Pattani, army rangers acting on a tip seized 80kg of urea fertiliser in a rubber plantation in Betong district.

The authorities said the large volume of fertiliser was believed to have been retained for used in an explosive device. Investigation is underway. (MCOT online news)

SOUTH CRISIS

Security tightened in Songkhla following violence

SONGKHLA: -- Security agencies in Songkhla province have stepped up security measures to prevent possible violent attacks by insurgent groups as Ramadan comes to an end.

Hat Yai police have set up checkpoints and are searching all vehicles after Songkhla governor Kritsada Boonrat ordered tighter security after intelligence gathering agencies warned that Songkhla may be the insurgent's choice of target.

The authorities also warned that three suspected stolen vehicles may be used for car bombings - a black Mitsubishi pickup truck and a black Mitsubishi sedan, both registered in Yala, and a silver bronze Isuzu pickup registered in Songkhla.

It was believed that the insurgents may plan a violent attack as Ramadan ends.

Posters of the stolen vehicles were distributed and posted in public places asking the public to help the authorities locate the vehicles.

Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit said Monday that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will discuss measures to address violence in the southern provinces on Wednesday afternoon.

He said that representatives of the National Security Council (NSC), the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre (SBPAC) and the Malaysian embassy would attend the meeting.

The meeting was expected to consider the imposition of a curfew and the pros and cons of existing measures, he said.

Yongyuth said there are different opinions on the curfew requested by some groups as the authorities must consider the overall impact.
