Bhokin heads coalition charter panel

BANGKOK: -- Bhokin Bhalakula, legal advisor of the Pheu Thai Party, was Tuesday appointed the chairman of the coalition special committee studying how to amend the charter.

Bhokin, one of 111 former Thai Rak Thai executives who have exited the five-year political ban, said the panel voted unanimously to appoint him the chairman.

Bhokin said the panel also appointed Pongthep Thepkanchana, another former Thai Rak Thai executive, as deputy chairman of the charter amendment panel.

Security reinforced in Hatyai until the end of Ramadan

SONGKHLA, 7 August 2012 (NNT)-Songkhla Provincial Police Deputy Commander Police General Akapob Prasitwattanachai has expressed his confidence that Hatyai will be peaceful throughout the Ramadan period.

According to the Deputy Commander, police have set 45 checkpoints along roads through which vehicles have access to Hatyai, and those that link the 3 southern most provinces.

Safety has been reinforced following the latest explosion at Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel in Hatyai. Police and military patrols, both on foot and by car, have been deployed to maintain law and order. Their presence, according to Police General Akapob, is meant to put pressure on the insurgents.

Approximately a thousand of them will continue to keep their eyes on the city of Hatyai until the end of the holy month of Ramadan and Hari Raya festival. Passengers on the trains crossing the Thai-Malaysian border will be frisked; they will also have to walk through a body scanner before they leave Hatyai Train station.

BANGKOK: -- The Cabinet today resolved to maintain the 7 per cent value-added tax rate for another two years or September 30, 2014, citing fragile economic condition as a result of floods in 2011. From October 1, 2014, the 9 per cent VAT rate would be applied.

Heay rains forecast in the North and Isan

BANGKOK, 7 August 2012 (NN)-The National Warning Center has issued a warning for residents living in the upper North and North Eastern of Thailand to brace for monsoon trough, which will bring heavy rains to the regions.

The Center has advised residents in these areas to be cautious when leaving their houses in the next few days. In the south of Thailand, the Southwestern monsoon is spreading across the southern part from the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman Sea. High waves 1-2 meters high will likely be generated due to the adverse weather conditions.

Fishermen should be extra vigilant when leaving the shore. However, Haikui Typhoon, which is expected to land on China tomorrow, will not affect Thailand.

PHUKET: -- The investigation of a suspected casino under construction on Rang Noi Island, just off the coast of Phuket Town, was carried out last Tuesday without prejudice and was not intended to defame or spite anyone, the top officer leading the raid has told the Phuket Gazette.
