Deputy PM praises Thai Olympic athletes

BANGKOK, 9 August 2012 (NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silpa-archa has said that although Thailand receives fewer medals than expected, he is pleased with all of the Thai athletes competing in the London 2012 Olympics.

After the Thai Taekwondo team received a bronze medal from the women 49-kilogram division player Chanatip Sonkham, Thailand now has two medals from the Olympics; the first being a silver medal from weightlifting. The country is hopefully waiting for another medal from boxer Kaew Pongprayoon, who will fight for gold on Friday night.

Mr Chumpol said although the Thai Olympic team this year does not receive as many medals as anticipated, the team did not fail the nation. He added all the athletes have performed their duties to the fullest of their ability.

As for the development of Thai players in the future, the Minister said Thailand must develop its athletes since they are in their childhood, much like the way China does. He suggested gifted children should be encouraged to enter sports schools, under the Department of Physical Education.

Mr Chumpol will propose to the Prime Minister that she hand a reward funds to athletes who have earned medals from the Olympics. Once they return home, the premier, if no previous engagement, will present them with the awards and funds, said the Minister.

SOUTH CRISIS

Explosion at Narathiwat school causes fright but no injuries

The Nation

NARATHIWAT: -- Insurgents on Thursday planted an explosive device at a Narathiwat school then triggered it when the bomb squad arrived at the school, but fortunately no one was injured in the incident.

Administrators of Ban Kawa School in Sungai Padi district suspended all classes for the day following the explosion.

School director Somjit Thongjinda said a student alerted her that a suspicious object had been found under the stone benches in front of the school canteen.

She immediately alerted the bomb squad, sealed off the area and moved 267 students and teachers from the scene.

When the squad arrived and was approaching the benches, the insurgents, apparently in hiding near the school, triggered the explosive. The blast blew a hole two feet deep and three feet wide. No one was injured and only the benches suffered any damage.

Police believe that the insurgents may have been targeting rangers who provide protection for the school. They usually use the benches during the lunch break.

MONEY MARKET

No irregularity in capital flows: BOT

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- There is no sign of irrigularity in capital inflows to Thailand, which is in line with regional movement, said an official of the Bank of Thailand.

Singchai Bunyayothin, senior director of the money market division at the Bank of Thailand, said that most inflows are going to the bond market and still stay there.

"The Thai baht has been influenced mainly by US dollar and the euro," he said.

Like Thailand, countries in the region also have witnessed similar inflows recently, following slight appreciation in the dollar and euro underpinned by improvement in some European indicators.

In the US, some indicators improved but it remains to be seen if the recovery can be sustained and if the US will need to launch the third round of quantitative easing (QE3).
