Top Muay Thai bouts to honor Queen's Birthday

Damaged light bulbs to be fixed throughout Bangkok

BANGKOK, 10 August 2012 (NNT) - Bangkok Governor has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) on replacing burnt out light bulbs around Bangkok. The governor also visited Bang Khen water pumping station to check on its readiness for this year’s water situation.

National Science and Technology Fair to be held on August 17-31

BANGKOK, 10 August 2012 (NNT) - The National Science Museum has announced that it is ready to hold a National Science and Technology Fair 2012 at BITEC during August 17-31.

According to Science and Technology Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi, the National Science Museum will hold the fair under the theme “Sparkling Ideas with Science.” He expected the fair to draw up to 1.2 million visitors.

The 6th National Science and Technology Fair 2012 is a grand event of the year, showcasing the latest in science and technology. It will propagate the potentials of Thai researchers and scientists. Over 150 agencies from 7 ministries from 10 nations help organize this fair.

Seventeen agencies from abroad will be among the exhibitors. Mr Plodprasop said the fair will be the grandest science fair in Asia this year.

The event will include an exhibition on His Majesty the King, the father of Thai science, showcasing His Majesty’s science projects and achievements. The fair will also celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 80th birthday anniversary this month. Her Majesty is considered the protecting mother of Thailand’s biodiversity.

As many people have of late been paying close attention to the US satellite launch to Mars, the National Science Museum has bought a weightless room, worth 12 million baht, from Japan; to allow visitors to experience zero gravity as if they were in space. Visitors can also take a ride in a 4D Theater, simulating a disastrous incidents and how to cope with disasters.

Another highlight is that guests will get a chance to look at the sky in Argentina from a telescope connected to an observatory in the Latin American country, which enables them to observe skies from both hemispheres at the same time.

The National Science and Technology Fair 2012 will be held at BITEC during August 17-31.

AIS, DTAC, True Move ready to bid for 3G service license

BANGKOK, 10 August 2012 (NNT) – Three major mobile service providers, AIS, DTAC, and True Move have said they are ready to bid for a 3G service license.

All the three providers attended a seminar on the future of Thai 3G (Third Generation) service. They said that the 3G service will allow Thai businesses and people easier and faster access to information, which will create more business opportunities.

They also agreed that whoever gets to provide the service should not charge inordinately for it, as it will become burdens to consumers in the future.

Meanwhile, a representative from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has disclosed that the Terms of Reference (TOR) for the 3G bidding will be forwarded to the NBTC meeting for approval on August 22nd. The bidding process is expected t begin in October.

EARTHQUAKE

Tremor strikes Uttaradit early morning

UTTARADIT: -- Local residents felt the ground shake when a minor earthquake hit Uttaradit's Ban Khok district Friday morning but there were no reports of damage, said Somboon Kositanon, director of mineral resources office in Lampang.

A quake with a magnitude of 3.1 and with its epicentre in the district hit at 8.01am.

Somboon said the quake was caused by a slide of the Nan-Uttaradit fault, which stretches from Nan to Uttaradit provinces.

The quake was the largest magnitude this year in the area, compared to 2.8 tremor that struck on January 31 in Chiang Rai's Thueng district and a second on April 5 in Chiang Rai's Muang district.

Thanarat Phummakasikorn, director of Sirikit Dam said the quake's epicentre was 13 kilometres underground and about 62.5 kilometres from the dam.

Thanarat confirmed that the earthquake had no impact on the dam, which is still open to tourists visiting Uttaradit.

Kittiratt: Government targets 3 economy-driving factors

BANGKOK, 10 August 2012 (NNT) – The Thai government is determined to boost the economy by focusing on 3 economy-driving factors and is also preparing measures to handle impact from the world economic crisis.

Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong has revealed at a debate on the topic: “Different Perspectives, Sharing Visions for the Capital Market”, that the government’s economic policy focuses on 3 aspects, namely domestic consumption, private-sector investment, and government spending. Additionally, the government has been preparing to cope with the world economic downturn.

Mr. Kittiratt elaborated that the government has to speedily encourage domestic consumption as well as investment. Furthermore, the government is considering issuing saving bonds worth 100 billion baht to offset the current budget deficit of 400 billion baht. According to Mr. Kittiratt, the bonds will be sold to the general public, and details of the bond issuance are expected to be concluded within 2 weeks’ time as the government has to assess all circumstances such as the interest rate and economic condition.

Prissana, 25, crowned Miss Thailand 2012

BANGKOK: -- Prissana Kampusiri or Bowling, 25, a master degree student of Thammasat University, was crowned Miss Thailand 2012 on Thursday night.

The first runner up was Bunnisa Sirisang or Baitoey and the second runner up was Nutta-orn Sophon or Dao.

Prissana, who was also named Miss Think Positive by BSC Cosmetology and Miss Friendship, receives a total of Bt8 million in prizes including Bt1.2 million in cash and a Mitsubishi sedan.

Three construction workers injured when crane collapses

BANGKOK: -- Three workers were severely injured when a construction crane as high as the 26th floor collapsed Friday, police said.

The accident happened at the Casa Condo Asoke which was being built.

A male worker lost his right leg another was knocked unconscious a female worker suffered a severe cut on her right angle in the accident that happened at 11:50 am.

The construction was carried out by TTS Engineering (2004) Co Ltd.

The crane collapsed from the 26th floor, causing metal bars and concrete pieces to fall on nearby houses and passing-by vehicles.

The Fatima Church Secondary School was also damaged.

40 insurgents want to surrender: Yutthasak

BANGKOK: -- The meeting of all government agencies concerned in Pattani was informed that some 40 insurgents wanted to surrender, Deputy Prime Minister Yutthasak Sasiprapha said.

The meeting was held at at the ISOC Area 4's Forward Command in Pattani's Yarang district.

Yutthasak said the meeting was informed that the insurgents worried about the possible legal actions against them and wanted the government to enforce Article 21 to exempt them from the legal actions.

Thailand misses London Olympics medals target
