Extension Of Long-Stay If Out Of The Country

Featured Replies

My elderly mother has a long-stay visa which soon expires. Unfortunately, she will be out of Thailand until late October. Is there anything I can do for her now at immigration? I have her passport with me here in CM.

Hmmmm, does kinda raise the question of how did she travel if you have her passport here.

Perhaps two passports??

There is nothing you can do because immigration rules require the applicant for an extension must do it themselves.

She will have to start all over again. If possible it would wise for her to get a non immigrant O visa before returning.

If she is still in Thailand now, she can try to apply for the extension on Tuesday with proof of needing to travel.

As mentioned she have to apply for the extension in person.

Normally this can be done during the last month of the current extension but it can be done earlier if you have prove of travel but it's up to the officer if he is doing this or not.

A third party can apply for a retirement visa extension, at least here in Chiang Mai, for someone who is in hospital or otherwise physically unable to come to the Immigration office. You need to have written permission from the holder of the visa extension, a letter from a doctor, photos of the ill person, etc. Obviously, the visa holder has to be in Thailand.

It wouldn't seem to be the case with the OPs mother, but I did want to correct the misinformation that someone has to come to Immigration in to execute a retirement extension of they truly are physically unable to do so because of illness.

If the OPs mother is going to be out of the country for several months prior to the extension ended, then she should apply for a new visa or enter the country under 30-day visa exempt status and start the retirement visa process over again.
