Witness against killer cops wants protection

The Nation

30188346-01_big.jpg

KALASIN: -- A witness in a case in which police were convicted of the extra-judicial killing of a Kalasin teenager yesterday asked the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) for protection, as she believed her life was still in danger even though the lower court found the officers guilty.

Pikul Phromchan, an aunt of 17-year-old accused thief Kiatisak Thitboonkrong, who was killed by police during Thaksin Shinawatra's anti-drug war in 2004, asked DSI chief Tharit Pengdit to extend her protection. Normally, witness protection ends once a court has ruled in a case. Pikul reasoned that, besides the murder of Kiatisak, she was a witness in other related cases that were ongoing, and as she and relatives were key witnesses, they might be harmed. Tharit said he would consider the request.

Thailand & Korea signed MOU on water management

BANGKOK, 15 August 2012 (NNT) – Thailand and South Korea have signed a Memorandum of Understand (MOU) on water management.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Theera Wongsamut, on Tuesday, represented Thailand in the signing of an MOU on water management with Mr. Myung Pil Shim from South Korea’s Ministry of Transport, Land and Maritime Land Affairs.

Mr. Theera stated that the newly-signed MOU allows senior officials and operating staff of both countries to exchange ideas and knowledge on how to efficiently manage water. It also opens doors for meetings and seminars on the issue, which will enable academics, researchers and interested individuals to share their information and technological advancement as well as experiences in respective areas.

The Thai Agriculture Minister believes that the closer cooperation of both nations will help Thailand improve its approaches for drought and flood, induced by global climate change.

Meanwhile, Mr. Myung Pil Shim said that South Korea’s leading construction companies have expressed an interest in Thailand’s water management project.

He stated that the MOU will pave way to more involvement of South Korea’s private sector and tighter relations between the two countries.
