Chittychangchang
I've met many Thai women over the years through my wife i hasten to add and most have 1 thing in common..... They have seen fit to change their first name ie: Supol to Sue Kaniker to Michelle Nit to ??? But to ??? Noi to ??? Porn to etc Is this to blend in better with farangs or because some Thai names are interpretted differently in different countries?

cmbe
They all have nicknames usually given to them when they are young by their parents. +1 Sometime they didn't change the name by themselves but other people called their name different from the real name, just for easier to pronoun and mostly similar to the real name or total different. Mossfinn
Most women and men for that matter have not changed their namesin my circle, Noi stays Noi, as Porn stays as Porn, maturity grows with age. What might change, is an easier understanding of a name, for example Toey, ( as best spelling as I can make out ) becoming Joey in English, but I have not met a kaniker that has materialised into miriam, not yet anyway. Mossfinn
I don't think he means the changing of their birth names, but a change in their nick names when they move to a foreign country.
bkkjames
well in that case, porn might be a good one to change when moving abroad in lieu of stereotypes.

bkkjames
As I said, maturity grows with age, how old are you? Excuse me Smartass, I was being serious. Go have another coffee and rethink a bit. Imagine some Thai girl in Europe etc with the name Porn sitting around the house and a bunch of foreigners asking her name. She replies Porn (chuckles heard everywhere). If you can't see how this could be potentially embarrassing for her because some farang overseas takes the piss because of her name. Carry on.

I have a good friend called Porn, and not one of my friends snigger when introduced, it's called maturity, but I guess we all find our natural level. I have a Smeg cooker, but nobody falls about laughing when they see it, no matter what connotation they place against it!! WinnieTheKhwai
It's actually not unlike Farangs changing or tweaking their name in Thailand so it's more easily pronounced and doesn't sound funny. Still, it's much more common for other Asians (Hong Kong, Singapore) to have common Western nicknames. Relatively few Thais bother with that, but they may change a nickname, or skip their given name or their surname and use a combination of their nickname and either their given name or surname. mca
Going the other way we deliberately gave our daughter a nickname that was sits equally easy in Thai and English to make it simple for her nan and granddad to say correctly as opposed to going through the various permutations of "Noi" or whatever. WinnieTheKhwai
Going the other way we deliberately gave our daughter a nickname that was sits equally easy in Thai and English Yeah, did that too. Even found one that is completely Thai when spelled in Thai and completely Western when spelled in English. That necessitated some creative transliteration between Thai documents and those for my country but that hasn't been a problem.

llso
This is actually an issue for my wife. Her actual given first name in Thai is "Rong" . She has been able to secure a fairly decent job in mid mangement in Farangland, and is constantly teased about her name as people say Ms. Rong is always right or something to that effect. It has really troubled her, and I myself even use to joke around with her that two Rongs don't make a right. I have told her that that is her name and she should be proud of it. I have a Thai female friend on Facebook is named Nutiporn and I get a lot of grief from that.

krisb
On another more serious note, the mrs and I are trying to find a name we can compromise on for our daughter to be born soon. You would think thats easy right? Wrong. Mrs wants a falang name. She said its upto me, righto how bout Sarah? No sounds like salah (tablet) ok how bout Emma?No sounds like maa dog. How bout Chloe? no sounds like koi (you know whats between your legs). Ok, gotta scrap my list and start again. So whats in a name works both ways. I can tell you it wont be Phi, Phu, or Porn though. forumuser10
I have a friend who´s name, Thais had a problem to say, so he changed it to Eric. I sometimes, when drunk, likes to call my self Gop, Thais like to call me that, it´s easier for them. Yngve Malmsten, changed his name to Yngwie Malmsteen when he moved to the US, cause Americans cant pronounce Yngve.
