I hua Hin there was talk of a tesco lynx supermarket opening up.

whilst there, we went to a thai run suermarket, could buy everything you would ever need in a uk supermarket.

forgot to pack a sponge in my luggage, trying to wash with bear hands was nigh on impossible so we went there to buy a sponge, armed with a bottle of shower gel and trying to do some corny movements explaining what i wanted(sponge) it caused a few checkout girls to be most amused.

got there in the end thoug.

anway,i hope tesco doesnt get hold in thailand, its <deleted> this countries small buinesses up,why should there be a huuge english chain set up shop in another country.

tesco are indeed opening a huge supermarket in hua hin , probably before the middle of the year.

tesco has a huge presence in thailand and they target the thai market , not the falang market.

thais have taken to tesco like ducks to water , as to whether the falangs in hua hin need a tesco , well i dont think we do.

the two small local supermarkets already there have a pretty comprehensive selection of stuff and there is an excellent greengrocer (golden place , near the palace ) selling organic fruit and veg , and a british butcher selling great imported fish ,meats , pies , traditional ready meals such as cottage pies , irish stews , mashed potatoes etc.

we want for very little in hua hin.

i dont expect to be a regular customer at tescos hua hin.

i use them when in bangkok , its more convenient to one stop shop there.no need to in hua hin , not too time consuming to get around to all the specialist food shops.

unfortunately , the checkout staff at thai tescos seem just as harassed , grumpy , sullen faced and robotic as the ones back in the uk.

and there is nothing sadder than the sight of a falang wearing some of tescos bargain basement clothes that always seem to just the wrong colour and style.

you may save a few baht on a weekly shop there , but the experience is often not nice.

much more enjoyable to buy from a smaller business where your face is known and you can establish some kind of relationship with the owner.

hopefully the expansion of tescos , carrefour and big c will be controlled a bit to safeguard local businesses , but something tells me it wont happen , its progress and unstoppable.
